Thu Jul 28, 2011
Winnipeg, MB (TM)
– Kevin Kylar won his first Manitoba Open men's
singles title by beating a five-time champion on
Sunday, July 24. In a match that lasted about three
hours, Kylar edged top-seeded Doug Devriendt 5-7,
6-3, 6-3 in front of a big crowd at the Winnipeg
Lawn Tennis Club. Kylar has now won the men's Open
singles event at four of the past five Tennis
Manitoba tournaments.
Kristina Sanjevic of Edmonton beat Calgary's Ally
Miller 6-3, 6-3 to win the Manitoba Open women's
singles championship. Sanjevic won the triple crown
at the tournament, pairing with Nada Marjanovic
(Ontario) and Tory Tronrud (B.C.) to win the women's
and mixed doubles titles.
Overall, 112 players entered the Manitoba Open.
Singles and doubles events at the 4.5 and 3.5 levels
run until Friday, July 29 at the Winnipeg Lawn
Tennis Club.

Top-seeded
Manitoban bounced from under-18 event
Winnipeg, MB (Allan Besson,Winnipeg
Free Press)
– Despite the humidex hovering around 40 Wednesday
afternoon, it was business as usual as the
International Tennis Federation Junior Circuit's
Canadian Mid-West under-18 tournament ran its second
day of competition at the Winnipeg Lawn Tennis Club.
One had to wonder, however, how long anyone could
last on the courts under the beaming sun with
temperatures in the 31 C range and no shade.
"It was hot and it was a tough match," said
Manitoba's No. 1 seed Kevin Kylar, admitting he was
struggling towards the end of his 7-5, 6-4 loss to
Dan Bednarczyk of London, Ont. "He is top ranked in
Canada. I'm not 100 per cent sure what his ranking
is, but he's good."
In fact, Bednarczyk is ranked fourth according to
Tennis Canada's website while Kylar is listed as
31st.
"I think I should have won the first set probably,"
said Kylar. "I was up 5-4, but I played really
well."
Actually, Wednesday's heat was not all that bad
compared to Tuesday when Kylar beat Stefan Cooper of
Great Britain 6-1, 6-1 in the first round. "Tuesday
was really awful. I mean you couldn't really run or
do anything. It was so hot that you just wanted the
game to be over."
In men's doubles competition Tuesday, Kylar and his
partner Tom Milnicoff, who is from Russia but is now
living in Florida, lost their second-round match in
the evening 6-2, 6-4 to Luke Gamble of Palm Coast,
Fla., and Mohd Marzuki of Malaysia. Kylar and
Milnicoff had won their opening match on Tuesday
6-2, 6-2 over Selem de Stefano of Brazil and
Edmonton's Jordan Sluchinski.
As it happens, Kylar's bowing out of the under-18
tournament may be a blessing in disguise as he is
also entered in the Manitoba Open tournament, which
runs Thursday to Sunday at the Winnipeg Lawn Tennis
Club.
The field for the Manitoba Open includes many of the
high-ranking juniors from the Mid-West tourney.
Kylar wasn't in favour of holding both tournaments
at the same time. But with a bye in the opening
round he has plenty of time to rest up for his first
game on Friday.
"I didn't like the idea of it," he said. "It (the
Manitoba Open) is an afternoon and evening
tournament, but (Tuesday) after I played two matches
(singles and doubles), I wouldn't have been able to
play another open match.
"It is not conducive to playing well in either
tournament," he said. "If you're playing a singles
match you don't really know whether to go after the
ball or whether to rest for the next match. And if
you are too tired you may have to pull out or put in
a poor performance. Obviously I am out of the
singles here (under-18 tournament), so it doesn't
matter anymore. Now I can concentrate on the Open
singles and the money."
A finalist in the Open last year, Kylar is
optimistic.
"There are some good players in there so it will be
tough, but I can make a run at it."

Main draw matches to start Thursday, July 21 at Winnipeg Lawn Tennis Club
Winnipeg, MB (TM)
– Manitoba’s best tennis players will be joined by
some top Canadian juniors at this week’s Manitoba
Open at the Winnipeg Lawn Tennis Club. The field
includes high-ranking juniors from Alberta and
Ontario who are in town this week to compete in the
Canadian Mid-West ITF U 18 tournament. Main draw
matches in the Manitoba Open run from Thursday, July
21 to Sunday, July 24.
“We’re excited to have these elite juniors
challenging the top players in our province,” said
Manitoba Open tournament director Sean Grassie. “It
makes for a very competitive field this year.”
The local contingent will be led by Doug Devriendt
and Evann Waschuk. Devriendt is a five-time Manitoba
Open men’s singles champion, while Waschuk is aiming
for her third straight triple crown. She won the
women’s singles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles
titles at the last two Manitoba Opens.
Two of Manitoba’s rising stars – Kevin Kylar and

juniors played in the final of the Deer Lodge/Tuxedo
Open in June, with Kylar winning 6-1, 7-6 for his
third championship in a row at Tennis Manitoba adult
tournaments.
Over 100 players will take part in the Manitoba Open
in different skill-level categories. The tournament
brings together tennis players from throughout the

Winnipeg welcomes back international tennis players
Mon Jul 18, 2011
Canadian Mid-West ITF U18 returns to Winnipeg Lawn Tennis Club
Winnipeg, MB (TM) – Back for a second year, the
International Tennis Federation (ITF) Junior Circuit
makes a stop in Winnipeg for the Canadian Mid-West
ITF U18 2011 being held this week at the Winnipeg
Lawn Tennis Club. The tournament main draw matches
start Tuesday, July 19th with finals taking place on
Saturday, July 23rd and are open to the public at no
admission fee.
The Canadian Mid-West ITF U18 event is part of the
Western Canadian Junior ITF Circuit that also makes
stops in Edmonton and Vancouver. The circuit’s aim
is to improve competitive opportunities in Western
Canada and provide Canada’s top junior players the
opportunity to compete for ITF ranking points on
home soil for three straight weeks.
The Winnipeg tournament has had a true international
flavour with players last year travelling from
Korea, Sweden, Germany, Great Britain, Croatia,
Mexico, Russia, Brazil, Australia and the USA.
The girl’s 2010 champion, Carol Zhao (Canada),
continued her momentum after the Winnipeg event to
reach the finals in the prestigious Eddie Herr
International, semi finals at the Dunlop Orange
Bowl, and recently won a round at the Junior French
Open before losing to the #2 seed. The 2010 boy’s
champion, Hugo Di Feo (Canada), comes off of a
victory winning the event in Vancouver last week, as
he returns to Winnipeg this week to defend his
title.
“This is a great opportunity for some of our
Manitoba juniors to measure up against juniors from
around the world,” says Bruce Waschuk, president of
Tennis Manitoba. “Local tennis enthusiasts certainly
won’t want to miss the chance to see this high level
of tennis being played in our own backyard.”
