Winnipeg, MB (TM) – Youth and the wind were the order of the day at the finals of the 111th Manitoba Open Tennis championships.

On the men’s side, 16 year old Kevin Kylar made it to his first Open final. He faced Minnesotan Tony Larson, a runner up last year. Despite the gusting prairie winds on Saturday in the semi finals, Kevin managed to oust the second seed, Roland Burrell in a three setter 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 to face Tony in the final. Wind gusts were 60 km/hour or more, sending chairs and equipment flying on the court in the final. After a straightforward first set for Tony, Kevin came on strong and forced a second set tie-break. The outcome was a 6-1, 7-6 (9) victory for Tony Larson.

The men’s doubles featured Tony Larson and Eric Yee from Saskatoon taking on Geoff Kirbyson and Muzeen Ismath of Winnipeg. The out of towners took the title in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.

In the mixed final played Friday evening, Evann Waschuk and Muzeen Ismath defeated Clarissa Chen and Geoff Kirbyson, 6-2, 7-6(2). This match was the first of three titles for Evann at this year’s Open. The second came in the Women’s Open singles where Evann won against Thunder Bay ON native, Shaylin Prout, 6-3, 6-1. The third crown for Evann was the Women’s Doubles where she and her 14 year old sister Kylie defeated sisters Emily and Erika Fridrik, 6-2, 6-4.

Dong Won Kang, who’s having a great 2010, defeated Noel Pe in the men’s 4.5 final 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. The men’s 3.5 final saw Jovial Anoling defeat Gary Ma 6-2, 6-2. This was Jovial’s second straight 3.5 victory after he won the Deer Lodge Hu’s on First Open title two weeks earlier.

The mixed 4.5 title went to Hiroko Kumagai and Jan Arndt, a home court competitor, who defeated Lisa Bayko and Glen Pheifer 6-2, 6-2. Men’s 4.5 doubles went to Lito Magduza and Noel Pe after they ousted the out of towners (Brandon Manitoba) Gilbert Lee and Kit Harrison, 7-6(2), 6-2.

The Open saw the return of a players’ dinner which was catered by Urban Prairie Cuisine and enjoyed by all the participants. Big thanks to our sponsors, Radisson Hecla resort, T.C Enterprises and Investor’s Group, and congratulations go to Peter Otto and his team at Kildonan as well as our officials, Grant Wuckert, David Kives and David Scrapneck for doing an outstanding job all week.

Hope to see all of you and more next year at the Winnipeg Lawn Tennis Club!
