Winnipeg, MB (Allan Besson, On the Home Front, Winnipeg Free Press)

The Winnipeg Lawn Tennis Club will be the site of the third in a trio of events comprising the Canadian Mid-West ITF under-18 Grade 5 tournament. The July event is part of the new Western Canadian Junior ITF Circuit. The July 18-24. Winnipeg tournament is put together through a partnership between Tennis Canada and Tennis Manitoba.

This will be the first international tennis event held in Winnipeg since the 1999 Pan-Am Games and several American players are expected.

"Adding another event in Western Canada creates more competitive opportunities for junior players in that region," Gavin Ziv, director of national events for Tennis Canada, said in a media release. "For Canada's top junior players, the ability to compete for three straight weeks on home soil for junior ITF ranking points is invaluable."

The Winnipeg event joins the Canadian Saville ITF U-18 Grade 5 event in Edmonton and the Canadian U-18 ITF World Ranking Grade 4 event in Vancouver. The first tournament takes place at the University of Alberta Saville, July 4-10, followed by the event at Stanley Park, July 10-17.

School time for tennis in St. James-Assiniboia

St. James-Assiniboia School Division

    Fri May 14, 2010
Winnipeg, MB (TM) – The South Winnipeg Tennis Community (SWTC) along with Tennis Manitoba have partnered with the St. James-Assiniboia School Division (SJSD) to promote tennis in west Winnipeg. The programming targets elementary schools in the division to introduce tennis as a sport to help achieve the health and wellness goals of schools.

The school division has been working closely with the South Winnipeg Tennis Community group for the past year with three schools participating in after school tennis programs. Initial student participation numbers have been very strong.

The three phases of the 2010 SWTC / SJSD program include:

1) Provide new Progressive Tennis equipment that is age appropriate and easy to use for kids new to the sport. Participating schools are provided equipment, which includes 3 mini-nets, 30 junior racquets and 30 sponge balls.

2) A tennis teaching professional is brought into each school to provide a day of instruction. This provides all the kids in the school a good introduction to Progressive Tennis which makes it fun to learn tennis when using the right ball, racket and court size for elementary aged students.

3) A SJSD TennisFest is scheduled for June 26th at Deer Lodge Tennis Club. This should be a fun event with each school having the instruction and equipment to practice before getting together with other division schools.

The goal for Tennis Manitoba and its partners is to help kids learn not just a sport, but self-confidence, sportsmanship, and the habits of an active, healthy lifestyle. We are committed to making sure that all kids have an opportunity to play and learn from this lifetime sport.

    Thu May 13, 2010
New tournament completes three-week Western Canadian Junior ITF Circuit

Toronto, ON (Tennis Canada) Tennis Canada in partnership with Tennis Manitoba announced on Wednesday the addition of the Canadian Mid-West ITF U18 Grade 5 event to the national competitive schedule. The event, to be held at the Winnipeg Lawn Tennis Club in Manitoba, will be the last of three events in July that make up a new Western Canadian Junior ITF Circuit.

“Adding another event in Western Canada creates more competitive opportunities for junior players in that region,” said Gavin Ziv, director of national events, Tennis Canada. “For Canada’s top junior players, the ability to compete for three straight weeks on home soil for junior ITF ranking points is invaluable.”

The Winnipeg event joins the Canadian Saville ITF U18 Grade 5 event in Edmonton and the Canadian U18 ITF World Ranking Grade 4 event in Vancouver to form the circuit. The first tournament takes place at the University of Alberta Saville Centre from July 4-10, 2010 followed by the Vancouver event at Stanley Park from July 10-17, 2010. The Winnipeg Lawn Tennis Club will host the juniors from July 18-24, 2010. This will be the first international tennis event held in Winnipeg since the 1999 Pan-Am Games.

In addition to individual tournament results, the male and female junior players who amass the most ranking points while playing the circuit will be crowned the 2010 Western Canadian Junior ITF Circuit Champions. Should the circuit champion be a Canadian, the player will be awarded a wildcard spot in the qualifying draw of the National Bank Canadian Open Junior Championships, a prestigious Grade 1 event held in Repentigny, Quebec from August 27-September 4, 2010.

Participants for the 2010 events must be born between January 1, 1992 and December 31, 1997 and must have reached their thirteenth birthday by the start of the main draw. For more information about the 2010 Western Canadian Junior ITF Circuit visit JoinTheTour.com.

2009 "Raising a Racquet for Kids" Awards Banquet took place at the Winnipeg Winter Club
    Wed May 12, 2010
Winnipeg, MB (TM) – The 4th Annual Tennis Manitoba Awards Banquet, presented by Kids Dental, was dubbed the Raising a Racquet for Kids fundraiser, with proceeds from the event going toward the development of junior tennis in the province. The evening kicked off with a terrific singles match between Peter Polansky and Philip Bester, followed by a doubles exhibition.

The dinner, silent auction and live auction generated a profit of $16,000, providing a boost for junior development in Manitoba. The funding will be directed to assist a variety of initiatives, which include wheelchair tennis, First Nations youth tennis program, competitive junior bursary and travel assistance, as well as the Tennis Manitoba Schools Program.

Thank you to everyone who supported junior tennis in Manitoba by attending the dinner, donating toward the auctions or sponsoring the event. We look forward to a great year of tennis in 2010!

Trio of titles for Manitoba seniors

File Photo
Geoff Kirbyson (left) and Peter Otto repeat as over-40 doubles champions at the recent Western Canadian Senior Indoor National Championships.
    Tue May 11, 2010
    Winnipeg, MB (Geoff Kirbyson, TM)

Manitoba brought home a trio of titles from the Western Canadian Senior Indoor National Championships in Calgary.

Peter Otto and Geoff Kirbyson defended their over-40 doubles title, while Ray Daumler won the over-45 singles and Terry Langan and Klaus Wrogemann won the over-65 doubles. The three belts equals the most ever won by the province at a senior national event, matching last year’s total. But it could have been even higher – Jason Whitaker lost the men’s over 40 singles in a third set tie-break, Langan and Wrogemann lost in the over-60 doubles final and Daumler and Kirbyson lost in the over 35-doubles final.

Otto said the back-to-back titles came under completely different circumstances.

“Last year, we were the unknowns, just a couple of guys from Manitoba and we were taken lightly. This year, we were the top seeds, so other teams knew who we were and made a point of scouting our matches,” he said.

“I like playing both roles. Last year we could play relaxed because nobody expected us to win. This year, we had to be sharper from the start to prevent our opponents from getting any confidence.”

The Manitoba contingent hopes to carry over their success at the outdoor nationals in Vancouver in August. All five Manitobans have a shot to make Tennis Canada's international team to play in New Zealand later this year.

Daumler picks up where he left off 10 long years ago

File Photo
"It was back in 1973 at the age of 8 that Ray Daumler took up the sport of tennis at the Kildonan Canoe Club. This was the start of a tennis career that would span 28 years and be filled with numerous highlights."

    Mon May 10, 2010
Winnipeg, MB (Allan Besson, On the Home Front, Winnipeg Free Press)

Manitoba tennis hall of famer Ray Daumler picked up his racquet six months ago after a 10-year hiatus, and if his performance two weekends ago at the senior national indoor championships in Calgary is any indication, the multiple Manitoba champion hasn't missed a beat.

Playing in the men's 45-plus singles, Daumler laid a 6-2, 6-0 beating on Gene Kelly, a three-time member of the Canadian seniors world tennis team.

In the men's 35-plus doubles, Daumler and Geoff Kirbyson lost in the final to Alex Policarpo and Dan Luijkx of Alberta 6-3, 6-1.

In his first major tournament since making a comeback, Daumler made the final of the Eastern Canadian senior tournament in Toronto, but lost to Gary Meanchos of Ontario 6-3, 6-3.

Daumler wasn't the only Manitoba story in Calgary. Terry Langan and Klaus Wrogemann won the 65-plus men's doubles by beating Pat Dowling and Rod Green of Alberta 6-4, 6-0, and Peter Otto and Kirbyson defended their 40-plus doubles crown by beating Tibor Ribi and Gyula Toth of Alberta 6-0, 6-0.

His 10 years away from the game were hard, but Daumler doesn't regret it. "My kids were, at the time, seven and eight. Tennis took a lot of time away from them. When you are doing 16-18 hours a week training, on top of your work and all that, it takes a lot of time away from your family," he said.

"I have never told anyone, but for at least three or four years I couldn't even look at the tennis court (after retiring), or come close to a tennis tournament. I knew it was something I had to do, but it was a heartbreaker.

"So to come back, and have another motivation, showing an older Ray Daumler, and what he can do, is very exciting.

"In early fall I began playing again, with the goal being senior tennis. I am going into my 45th year and so thought I'd give it a try. I have always kept working out hard."

Son Bradley is now 19 and his daughter Alexa-Rae is 16, so now he feels he can get back to the game.

"My personality is that I have always been hard on myself. I believe in my abilities and I expect a lot of myself. I am trying to have more fun in it, but I still have that same competitive nature that I played with for 28 years prior to retiring. I won about 150 events spread out across Canada, as well as the north-central United States. You don't just flush that out of the system so easily. The competitive nature is still there."

Daumler says that he intends to compete on the Manitoba circuit this year. "I will be playing in the open events. I am not back just to play seniors. I am not saying I will win anything, but I'll show that a 44-year-old can play at a high level of tennis. I'll always do my best to win."
