Kids Dental Confirms Top Juniors

Winnipeg, MB (TM) – It was business as usual for both of Manitoba’s top under 18 year old junior tennis players at the recent 2010 Kids Dental Junior Open. Evann Waschuk needed the super tie break to defend her 2009 Kids Dental title in the girls U18 category when she defeated Alexia Cholakis 5-7, 6-3, 10-4.

In the boys U18's final it was Igal Mostkov that also went to the super tie break to oust number two seed Muzeen Ismath 2-6, 6-3, 10-8. In the boys U14 final Cole LaCap took out top seeded Jerome Hood of Quebec in a tough three set final.

Cassidy MacDonald earned the girls U12 championship as she defeated both the number one and two seeds. In doubles action the girls team of Anna Liu & Cassidy MacDonald won their round robin, as did the boys team of Earinpreet Hirkewal & Ben Charbonneau.

U14 Girls Diorella Rosario def. Lea Zaifman 6-4, 6-3

U12 Boys Earinpreet Hirkewal def. Patrick Fu 6-7, 7-5, 10-7

U14 Boys Cole LaCap def. Jerome Hood 2-6, 7-6(5), 10-8

U16 Boys Eagan Peters def. Shane Nichols 4-6, 7-5, 10-4

U18 Boys Igal Mostkov def. Muzeen Ismath 2-6, 6-3, 10-8.

South African Jeff Player Named Executive Director of Tennis Manitoba

Winnipeg, MB (TM) – Tennis Manitoba announced today the hiring of international tennis player, coach and administrator Jeff Player as the new Executive Director of the official governing body for the sport of tennis in Manitoba.

Jeff Player, who was born and raised in South Africa, has an impressive tennis background as a player that includes a U.S. college career at Central Texas College and the Virginia Polytechnical Institute in the 1980's followed by several years on the world professional tennis circuit where he achieved ATP rankings of 490 in singles and 430 in doubles. His coaching resume includes stops in South Africa, Europe and Canada where he has mentored young high performance players toward professional careers as well as developing grassroots tennis programs.

From 1998 through 2001, while working as a coach at North Shore Winter Club and Hollyburn Country Club in Vancouver, Player developed a widely acclaimed elementary schools program on the lower British Columbia mainland with more than 23,000 children enrolled. From 2001 until 2005, when he returned to South Africa, Player was the Director of Tennis Development for Tennis British Columbia where he focused on increasing tennis participation through community development programs, improving coaching at the club level and making the sport of tennis widely available through schools programs.

As Executive Director of Tennis Manitoba, Player will work with Tennis Canada, other provincial tennis associations and the tennis community across Manitoba to grow and support tennis at all levels of the sport. He will relocate to Winnipeg with his wife and children to assume his new role on April 1, 2010.

Tennis Manitoba looking for a Provincial Team Coach

Winnipeg, MB (TM) – Tennis Manitoba is currently looking for a coach to lead it's junior high performance provincial tennis team program.

The Tennis Manitoba Provincial team was introduced in 2004 and has provided some of Manitoba's top juniors with on-court and fitness training, a full range of analysis services for continued development as well as travel opportunities for out-of-province competitions. The program has also been used to prepare Team Manitoba for both the Canada and Western Canada Summer Games.
