Winnipeg, MB (TM) – Tennis Manitoba and Tennis
Saskatchewan have been notified by Tennis Canada
that the number of spots being allocated to the
Prairie Region for the Rogers Junior National
Championships will be
reduced from 4 to 3. The change will take effect for
the 2010 indoor Rogers Junior National Championships.
This
has precipitated a change in the selection process
for the players from both provinces. A Prairie
Regional Qualifier will be held March 5-7, 2010 in
Saskatoon to select the top 3 boys and top 3 girls
in each age group (U12, U14, U16 and U18's). Each
draw will consist of up to 6 players, with 3 spots
being given to each province.
Further
details regarding the Prairie Regional Qualifier and
the process for the selection of the players that
will represent Manitoba at the Prairie Regionals
will be announced in the near future.

Doubles bronze in
men's event 'feels
awesome' Winnipeg, MB (Paul Wiecek,
Winnipeg Free Press) – An embattled Manitoba
tennis team, medal-less
and playing without a
team member who was
quarantined with what
proved to be a
non-existent case of the
H1N1 flu, finally got
some good news at the
Canada Games in Prince
Edward Island on
Thursday.
Team members Sean Bailey
and Chad Lacap won
bronze for Manitoba in
the men's doubles event,
the first medal of the
Games for the Manitoba
tennis team and just the
second of any kind for
Manitoba in P.E.I.
Triathlete Sarah-Anne
Brault won silver for
Manitoba on Tuesday.
Bailey, 17, and Lacap,
15, defeated Alberta in
straight sets, 6-3, 6-3,
to capture the bronze.
"It feels awesome," said
Lacap, who's going into
Grade 11 at Maples
Collegiate next month.
"We stuck to our game
plan. We played it
tough."
Lacap and Bailey have
been practice partners
at the Winnipeg Winter
Club for the past five
years, but Bailey said
the two had been playing
doubles together only
since being selected for
Manitoba's Games team
barely a month ago.
"We're pretty
comfortable with each
other," said Bailey.
Thursday's bronze medal
was a bit of a
going-away present for
Bailey, who begins
first-year classes next
week at Tennessee's
Austin Peay State
University, an NCAA
Division 1 school.
Bailey, a graduate of
Miles Mac, will be
attending on a tennis
scholarship. "I'm pretty
pumped," he said. "I
come home for a day and
then I have to leave
right away because
classes begin Aug. 27.
"Tennis has been pretty
good to me."
It hasn't been so good
for the rest of the
Manitoba tennis team,
however. The team has
been shut out of the
medals except for the
lone bronze and on top
of that, player Muzeen
Ismath was quarantined
in P.E.I. this week with
a possible case of H1N1
flu. Ismath was released
Thursday night after the
test results came back
negative.
A Manitoba team official
said Thursday that
Bailey and Lacap had
both been forbidden to
discuss their stricken
teammate.
Manitoba's medal tally
of two has the province
way down in the medal
standings in P.E.I.
Quebec is dominating the
competition with 32
medals, including 10
gold, followed by B.C.
with 21 medals and
Ontario with 20.
Manitoba's medal tally
of two puts the province
in seventh place, two
medals behind
sixth-place Saskatchewan
and one ahead of New
Brunswick.
Newfoundland, Nunavut,
Northwest Territories,
Yukon and P.E.I. have
all yet to medal.
Manitoba was shut out in
rowing finals on
Thursday but has three
more chances to medal in
finals today. Both the
province's beach
volleyball teams will
also play in
bronze-medal games
today.
The province's softball
team will play in the
page playoff 3 vs. 4
game today against
Quebec after finishing
the round-robin alone in
third place at 7-2.
The winner of
Manitoba-Quebec will
play the loser of
today's 1 vs. 2 game
between B.C. and Ontario
in the semi-final
Saturday. The winner of
that game will then
advance to the final to
play the winner of
B.C.-Ontario.

Winnipeg, MB (TM) – After losing a tough 3 set semi-final match to

the Canada Summer Games in PEI. This was the final

Tennis ball and racquet sales throughout Canada
increased four per cent in 2008
Toronto,
ON (Tennis Canada)
Tennis Canada, Tennis Professionals Association (TPA)
and leading distributors of tennis equipment in
Canada announced Tuesday the formation of the
Canadian Tennis Industry Association (CTIA).
“The creation of a Canadian Tennis Industry
Association is long overdue for the benefit of
tennis in Canada,” said Michael S. Downey, president
and chief executive officer, Tennis Canada. “After
learning from the successful association in the
United Sates over the past few years, we are
optimistic that the joining of tennis leaders within
or country will strengthen our sport.”
Initial membership consists of major Canadian
distributors for balls and racquets including
Wilson, Dunlop, Head-Penn, Prince, Babolat, and
Yonex, in partnership with Tennis Canada and the TPA.
The association plans on expanding membership over
time to include various key partners with mutual
objectives.
The group will meet formally on a regular basis with
a mandate to maximize strategies and resources to
grow the game and optimize retail experience. A key
component to deliver this mandate includes
commissioning and assessing tennis-specific consumer
research.
The CTIA distributors have agreed to share sales
shipment data to help measure the health of the
game. Wholesale tennis ball sales rose 4.5 per cent
and racquet sales grew 3.9 per cent in Canada during
2008. Tennis racquet and ball sales trends are
regarded as reliable indicators of overall
participation and health of the game and thus key
metrics for the group to track.
“On behalf of all of the tennis equipment
distributors involved with the CTIA, I believe this
is a great step towards stimulating growth in tennis
throughout Canada,” said Doug Coombs, Business
Racquet Sports, Amer Sports Canada, who represents
Wilson. “While we are competitors in the tennis
marketplace, we also share a love for the sport and
the desire to see more people participate on a
regular basis.”
“The Tennis Professionals Association represents
more than 2,000 tennis professionals, coaches and
certified instructors in Canada who greatly
contribute to the well being of our sport,” said Ari
Novick, director, coaching and TPA. “We are pleased
to join in the new association as we collectively
work together to grow tennis in Canada.”
These statistics, combined with other consumer
research findings support that tennis in Canada is a
growing, healthy sport.

Winnipeg, MB (Daniel
Falloon,
Winnipeg Free Press) – Manitoba's tennis team was
on both sides of dominating performances at the Canada
Games on Sunday in P.E.I.
After taking five of six matches from Team Saskatchewan,
the tables were turned against Team B.C., who won five
of six against the 'Tobans.
The duo that prevented the sweep, men's doubles team
Sean Bailey and Chad Lacap, won both their matches.
After downing Saskatchewan's Quin Pon and Jonathan Waslen
2-0 (6-1, 6-1), the pair took down Riaan du Toit/Justin
Alexander Guay 2-0 (6-2, 7-6).
"I told them you don't have to win for the team," said
head coach Peter Otto. "It's too bad you don't have
to fight for the team, but play for yourselves. But
they stepped it up and they have a good chance of winning
the whole thing."
Even though Manitoba had already lost the series with
B.C. when they took the court, Bailey, 17, said that
he and Lacap, 16, tried to regain some of the province's
swagger.
"Going into the match we were going, 'oh, our team has
lost,' but 'Toba pride, we gotta win this one," said
Bailey.
Bailey and Lacap fell behind 5-2 in the second set,
but fought back in some hotly contested games to win
the match.
"We lost about five games in deuce just because our
opponents made some good shots or we screwed it up,"
said Bailey.
"Our teammates started cheering a little bit louder,
so they really got us back into it. They were being
pretty rowdy. Not disrespectful, but it's good to have
them on our side."
The pair were put together for the 2007 Western Canada
Games, but haven't been teamed together since. However,
Bailey and Lacap have practised together for about five
years, which helps ease the transition.
"We're starting to get some good bonding and we're starting
to click," said Bailey. "We know each other really well,
we're really good friends."
Each brings different skills to the court, which Bailey
said could make them a dangerous team going forward
this week.
"I would say my strength is my serve, and Chad's just
got a wicked forehand, so it gives us some good momentum
coming towards the net."How Manitoba did...
