Winnipeg,
MB (Rufus Nel, Tennis Canada) – It is hard to
believe that one year ago I was standing watching
the Manitoba Open at Kildonan and meeting new people
telling so many stories about all the tennis
activities and events that happen around the
province. After travelling around to all the smaller
communities I was able to assess for myself what the
tennis situation was like in Manitoba.
In my
position as Senior Director for the Prairie Tennis
Alliance my responsibility is to help Rick
Bochinski, Executive Director for Tennis Manitoba,
build sustainable programs that are accessible for
everyone. Working alongside Rick we have been able
to get the message out to many organizations that
people can learn and play tennis anywhere if they
use the right equipment.
This
fall there will be over 30 communities offering
community team tennis programs, and by the end of
summer we will have had hundreds of kids participate
in the Rogers Rookie Tour events throughout the
province.
An
under-12 (U12) provincial program was piloted in
January where selected U8-U12 juniors trained with
National coaches from Tennis Canada. This summer we
are doing a talent search for athletes who will be
invited to a tryout camp in September, where we will
select juniors to train in programs to compliment
the good work their coaches are doing with them. Our
goal is to have an accessible pathway for all
juniors and adults of all ages and abilities to be
able to achieve their tennis aspirations.
In June
we handed out 500 rackets at our first Kids Dental
Tennis Fest, a grassroots awareness event that is
the first stage in the pathway that will hopefully
attract many kids to a sport for life.
I would
like to thank everyone involved in tennis for making
my first year a fantastic experience, and together I
hope we can build a province where tennis will be
played by everyone everywhere.

Winnipeg, MB (TM)
– After winning the Mixed Doubles Championship on Saturday,

titles on Sunday to cap off an impressive weekend of
tennis at the Winnipeg Lawn Tennis Club.
Waschuk dispatched top seeded Alexa Zayac 6-4, 6-3
in the singles final and then teamed up with Erika Fridrik
to earn a hard fought doubles victory, 6-3, 2-6, 7-6(5)
over Anita Paskvalin and Clarissa Chen. Trailing 5-1
in the deciding tiebreak, Waschuk and Fridrik reeled
off 6 consecutive points for the dramatic win.
Waschuk will continue her busy summer as she represents
Manitoba at the U16 Outdoor Junior Nationals in early

through the draw for the 7th seeded Larson.
Choi followed up his singles win by teaming with Winnipeg’s
Jared Connell to earn a 7-5, 4-6 victory over David
Jackson of Maryland and Ontario’s Irfan Shamasdin. The
