Rogers Rankings – Adding up wins

    Sat Oct 11'08
Winnipeg, MB (TM / TC) – By now you have heard the news that Tennis Manitoba will be teaming up with Tennis Canada and the other provincial tennis associations to launch the new Rogers Rankings head-to-head national ranking system on January 1, 2009. (If this is news to you, click here to get the background details.) The system will award points to players based on quality of wins, and deduct points in a similar manner.

How does this impact you, a player that participates in tournaments on the Tennis Manitoba Open / Junior Tours? If maintaining a national ranking position is important to you, then you’ll be happy to learn that each match can generate ranking points. Matches against much stronger opponents will provide big rewards for the underdog should they snag a victory. The system should also help cut down on voluntary defaults often found in consolation matches, as the “no show” player will be deducted points.

Here is an example of how the Rogers Rankings will fluctuate if a stronger player defeats a weaker player or vice versa. Points used here do not reflect the actual points of these players and are only being used to demonstrate how to calculate position movement with the Rogers Rankings. In our example we are going to make the following assumptions:
  • Tournament Star Value = 5 stars

  • Frank Dancevic has 3800 points and is playing against Peter Polansky, who has 3500 points. The point difference between the two players is 300.

  • The difference in points falls between 300 – 399 points under the five-star column on the head-to-head points chart.

Tennis Manitoba, along with Tennis Canada and the other provinces have been testing the system with results from tournaments held since January 1, 2008. The test results will help determine a player’s initial ranking position. So it’s not too soon to start adding up wins.

    Tue Oct 7'08
Winnipeg, MB (TM) – It was a great year on the local tennis scene for 15 year-old Evann Waschuk. She was able to lock down the top ranking positions in both the U16 and U18 junior girls age categories with just over half a season of tournament play. In total Evann earned three championship titles after taking the top spot on the 2008 Tennis Manitoba Open Tour in the Women's Open Singles category. (See previous article on 2008 Open Tour Champions).

To complete the family sweep, younger sister Kylie was able to hold on to both the junior girls U12 and U14 points race, needing the final Junior Tour match of the season to fend off her nearest challenger.

On the boys side, Sean Bailey was able to establish himself as the top junior boy in the province while new comer Igal Mostkov made an immediate impact in the U16 points race. Both Jeremy Gunn and Kevin Kylar added some drama in their age categories, taking the points lead after the final Junior Tour tournament recently held at Glendale Golf & Country Club.

The 2008 Tennis Manitoba Junior Tour Champions are:

     U12 Girls Kylie Waschuk
     U14 Girls Kylie Waschuk
     U16 Girls Evann Waschuk
