Tennis Canada Joins Forces with Tennis Manitoba and Tennis Saskatchewan to develop Tennis in the Prairies

Rufus Nel named senior director of Prairie Tennis Alliance

    Mon Jun 30'08

(Tennis Canada) – Tennis Canada, in conjunction with Tennis Manitoba and Tennis Saskatchewan, announced Monday the joint hiring of Rufus Nel as senior director of the Prairie Tennis Alliance.

Nel, who was born and raised in South Africa, possesses an impressive tennis resume that includes more than 30 years of coaching experience in South Africa, Germany, California and Canada. In his home nation he worked closely with Neville Godwin, a former Top 100 player on the world rankings, and while living in British Columbia he took a young Philip Bester under his wing and guided him to become a junior tennis phenom.

For the past 14 years Nel has worked at the Hollyburn Country Club in West Vancouver, starting as an assistant before moving up to head pro and then tennis director. In his time there, Hollyburn grew into a major club with programs available for children and adults of all ages. It also hosts three provincial tournaments annually and the Odlum Brown Vancouver Open which is an ATP and Sony Ericsson WTA Tour event. The club received the 2007 Tennis Canada and Tennis Professionals Association (TPA) Excellence Award for Facility of the Year. Nel will now move his entire family to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan to take on his new role.

“Tennis Canada is pleased to have Rufus on board in this newly formed position,” said Hatem McDadi, vice-president of tennis development for Tennis Canada. “Rufus brings a wealth of tennis experience to the Prairies, and I am confident he will play a significant role in developing the sport in this region and building on the success currently in place. All partners are excited to have Rufus join our team.”

As the senior director, Nel will work with Tennis Canada, Tennis Manitoba and Tennis Saskatchewan to lead all tennis development programs and activities in the prairies to help achieve Tennis Canada’s mission of growing, promoting and showcasing tennis in Canada and developing a system that is capable of producing world-class players.

“I am very excited to be taking on this new position,” said Nel. “I have been coaching for a very long time and am looking forward to a new challenge. I am thrilled to have been given the opportunity to build the game of tennis in the prairies.”

Together, Tennis Canada and the provincial tennis associations will create a total of six customized joint regional staff positions whose mandate is to deliver growth, retention and excellence strategies which will be utilized at a national level over the next two to three years. In order to fulfill this mandate, Tennis Canada, Tennis Manitoba and Tennis Saskatchewan will work together to develop tennis in the region.

Tennis Manitoba and Saskatchewan become the third region to adopt a regional director joint staff position following in the footsteps of the Atlantic Tennis Alliance and Tennis BC.

College Scholarships Awarded to Canadians

Anita Paskvalin will be heading to Rollins College, Florida this fall. Anita has been a standout on the Tennis Manitoba Junior Tour and previous participant of the Tennis Manitoba Provincial Team program.

    Wed Jun 18'08

Toronto, ON (TC) – Tennis Canada is pleased to announce the Canadian recipients of tennis scholarships to colleges in the United States for September 2008.

The class of 2008 is a special one because its student/athletes earned scholarships under the new and more demanding eligibility rules declared by the NCAA, the US college governing body. In addition to graduating from high school on time, high performance junior tennis players must also meet higher core academic standards acquired throughout their high school years.

Under the leadership of Greg Novak, Tennis Canada’s college program helps American college coaches recruit Canadian players. The program recently developed a new Web site in which players are able to upload their profiles and videos, which enables college coaches to make quick evaluations of Canadian talent. The site also provides coaches with current rankings and match play of players already pre-evaluated by Novak.

In addition, the Canadian college program keeps in touch with our Canadians down south in order to share their success stories with the Canadian tennis community.

The annual University and College National Tennis Championships is another great venue to display the progress of these student/athletes to the Canadian tennis community.

The regional qualifying tournaments for this event take place after players return home each May/June. The final eight male and female regional qualifiers will then have an opportunity to showcase their skills during the final weekend of the Rogers Cup at the world-class Rexall Centre in Toronto.

This year’s scholarship recipients will be eligible to compete in this annual event next year after their first year of university.

Multi-use tennis courts open at St Pierre school

Students, donors and their representatives, including Mavis Tailleau, MLA for Morris, and Adrien Grenier, Division Scholaire Franco-Manitobaine board of trustees member, gather to show off the plaques of the more than 60 contributors that helped to build new community tennis courts at École communautaire Réal-Bérard in St Pierre. - THE CARILLON Archives
    Thu Jun 12'08
Steinbach, MB (The Carillon - Terry Frey) – Ecole communautaire Réal-Bérard hosted a special ribbon cutting ceremony Friday recognizing the hours of effort and thousands of dollars that went in to building new tennis courts for the community.

Principal Bernard DesAutels said that the project started in September 2006 and a year later the courts were in, minus the nets and other minor details. Though the weather did not cooperate in allowing the details to be completed before the school year, the courts were still usable for floor hockey, soccer and lacrosse.

The St Pierre RCMP even challenged the senior high students at the school to a floor hockey match on the new courts earlier this year, which the students won quite readily according to DesAutels.
Now boasting two tennis courts and four half-court basketball areas, the facility is ready to be used by the public as well. The area is 120 by 120 feet and is surrounded by a 16-foot high fence.

There are four topcoats on the courts, which will ensure a lasting finish for at least eight years. Lights, benches and other beautifications will also be added in the near future to complete the project.

The project cost approximately $80,000, which came from a total of 64 donors. Individual donors came from as far away as Saskatchewan and corporate donors included businesses from Winnipeg, Steinbach and even Altona. Two students also donated money towards the facility.

When asked how he was able to rally up so much support, DesAutels said a lot of letters were sent out, noting that his bill for stamps alone was about $300.

Thanks to the project, a tennis club will now be forming in the area as well, providing yet another recreational activity for the community. This was the exact inspiration for the entire undertaking, according to DesAutels.

DesAutels, who is a tennis player himself, came up with the idea when the province started promoting a healthier lifestyle. Instead of stopping at just the school level though, the committee decided to extend it to the community as a whole.

The school division agreed with the initiative, offering up land at the school to be used as well as $30,000. The province also contributed a large sum towards the project.

The school will look after the regular maintenance of the courts, as well as provide rackets and balls for the public to use. The school purchased 75 industrial strength rackets in three different sizes with the money raised and will lend to them out to the general public as needed to ensure that everyone gets a fair chance to enjoy the sport.

Users will be expected to follow basic rules of fair play and respect. There will be a 30-minute rule in effect when there are other people waiting to use the courts.

DesAutels noted that if the signs listing the donors were ever to become in poor shape, they would be replaced. He emphasized the fact that the courts are there only because of all the donors and the least they can do to show their appreciation is to ensure their names are always on display and can clearly be seen.

933 Consecutive Shots!

Photo: Rick Bochinski

Kylie Waschuk (left) partnered with Daniella Silva to set the record of hitting 933 consecutive baseline rally shots during the recent Tennis Canada junior development camp. The girls are pictured with Bob Brett who works with Under 12 talent development programs.

    Tue Jun 10'08
Winnipeg, MB (TM) – It took a lot of concentration, not to mention some skill in mathematics. Kylie Waschuk and Daniella Silva exchanged shots from the baseline at the Sargent Park Tennis Center during the junior development camp with Tennis Canada coach Bob Brett on June 5th. It seemed like just another drill, although each pair of players was told to count the number of consecutive shots hit back and forth with their partner. By the time the girls were finished, they had hit 933 consecutive shots!

“This is a great accomplishment”, exclaimed Brett. “Kylie and Daniella have broken the record set earlier this year by Paul John and Brayden Schnur of Ontario, who hit 715 consecutive shots. It’s important that we celebrate the successes of the players” said Brett, as he presented the girls with t-shirts to remember the event.

Brett conducts camps in each region of the country for the top junior players. Only time will tell if the record set by Kylie and Daniella will stand until his next visit in the fall.

Congratulations girls!
