Winnipeg, MB (TM)
– Tennis Canada working in partnership with the Provincial
Tennis Associations has secured a 3-year agreement with
Dairy Farmers of Canada (DFC) to recognize the “Everyday
Tennis Champions” who are enjoying the rewards of a
healthy and active lifestyle. This partnership is a
perfect fit, providing an exciting opportunity to our
tennis family and community to continue promoting the
health and well being benefits of tennis and a sport
for life.
The campaign will be officially launched in major markets
across Canada on May 22nd with participation from top
Canadian tennis players Daniel Nestor, Stephanie Dubois
and Frank Dancevic, and will be the springboard to a
historic activation plan that will continue throughout
the tennis summer and fall tennis season. The activation
plan will include TV, print, radio public service announcements
(PSAs) and grass roots on site activation. This is a
terrific opportunity to promote tennis, excellence at
all levels and healthy active lifestyles across Canada
with the potential to attract new participants to our
sport.
The grassroots activation component of the campaign
will involve select events provincially and nationally,
receiving a vibrant activation team of two individuals
who will travel in a customized “Everyday Champions”
van to enhance events. This activation team will be
providing dairy samples, handing out prizes, building
Every Day champions brand presence, handing out important
nutritional information, setting up contests and organizing
games. The activation teams will create a festive atmosphere
and positive environment for competitors and spectators
alike.
In Manitoba, the following events have been selected
by Tennis Canada:
June
7 – Grand Opening of the
Sargent Park
Tennis Center

Winnipeg, MB (Ashley
Prest,
Winnipeg Free Press)
By the end of this week, there will have been more than
1,200 children making quite a "racquet" around Winnipeg
tennis courts as part of the Tennis Futures Program.
Now in its 12th year under teacher Bill Serbin, the
program is a field trip for grades 3 to 6 students from
select schools in each school division and is a chance
for youngsters to learn tennis.
"It's a healthy, active field trip where the kids are
exposed to sport that they can go out and play in the
community with their friends or against a wall," said
Serbin, a physical education teacher at John de Graff
School for five years and a certified tennis coach.
"They're learning all the basic strokes to the game
-- forehand, backhand, serve, volley, smash, a lot of
movement skills -- which offers a multitude of benefits.
It's an Olympic sport, it's inclusive, as you can play
in a wheelchair, and it caters to the very young and
seniors."
On Tuesday, there were 234 students at the Winnipeg
Lawn Tennis Club, including many who were trying the
sport for the first time.
"It was really fun and I was really impressed with what
I could do," said Sydney Harder, a Grade 4 student at
Joseph Teres School. "I could really hit the ball very
high and hard. I really do (want to play tennis again)."
Also from the Joseph Teres Grade 4 group was Braydon
James, who hit a tennis ball around before, but now
knows how to hit properly.
"It was really, really fun. I liked how we got to do
a bunch of different skills and stuff," he said. "Some
of it was a little tough, having to hit the ball into
the other court, but it was fun."
Rick Bochinski, executive director of Tennis Manitoba,
a partner in the program along with Arby's, said the
goals are to create more tennis players and active children.
