Winnipeg, MB (TM)
– The Eastern Washington University (EWU) men's tennis
team rallied from an imposing deficit with the season
on the line to come out victorious, the result being
the team's first-ever Big Sky Conference championship
and a berth in the NCAA Championship. Winnipegger
Patrick Millican, in his fourth and final year
at EWU, competed in doubles and played an important
role in the team victory.
After incredibly rallying from a 3-0 deficit in a
4-3 win over Montana State in the semifinals on Saturday
(April 26), the Eagles came back from 3-1 down against
host and regular-season champion Sacramento State for
an incredibly dramatic 4-3 victory on Sunday (April
27).
The first two rounds of the 64-team NCAA Championship
will take place from May 9-11 at campus sites to be
determined. The teams that prevail there will advance
to the Round of 16 on May 16 in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Tennis enthusiasts
form association

| A new tennis association has been formed in Steinbach with the goal of improving the facilities in the city.

Steinbach, MB (The
Carillon - Terry Frey) – With the assistance of
a grassroots Tennis Canada program initiated in Steinbach
last year, a local group of tennis enthusiasts has formed
the Steinbach Community Tennis Association in order
to better promote and grow the sport in the community.
Under the leadership of Scott Masterson, Steinbach is
in the second year of the Tennis Canada Building Tennis
Community program. The program, which provides about
$2,000 a year in funding for three years is made available
to help grow the sport, primarily to fund instructors
for schools in the region and perhaps fund summer tennis
camps for youth.
Masterson is an avid tennis player and organizes the
Steinbach Tennis League, which had about 35 participants
last year. He has attended the Building Tennis Communities
national conference at Toronto's Rexall Centre.
The Steinbach Tennis Association was formed at a public
meeting April 10 in Steinbach attended by about 20 local
tennis players and others, including representatives
from the city Parks and Recreation department. The first
association that has been formed includes Masterson
and four other members.
Masterson says the main advantages of having a formal
association is to make it easier to make formal presentations
to city council to lobby for improved facilities. "We
can also accept grants and donations," Masterson noted.
Most of the discussion at last week's meeting involved
the state of the tennis facilities in Steinbach and
the need to improve and expand on those facilities,
considering the renewed interest in the sport in the
community and the fact that three tennis courts are
insufficient in this growing city.
The first and most pressing matter is that the current
tennis courts downtown at the corner of Lumber and Third
Streets are in urgent need of resurfacing. To resurface
the existing three-court facility, which would include
excavation, could cost in the neighbourhood of $50,000.
But ultimately what is needed is an entirely new tennis
complex constructed at another location in the city.
One mention was made of a six-court facility just completed
at Sargent Park in Winnipeg, built at a cost of $400,000,
including fencing and lighting.
Masterson says the forming of this association "will
hopefully speed up the process in improving our facilities
in Steinbach."

Winnipeg, MB (Submitted
by Glendale Golf & Country Club)
After a year absence the
Auto Haus Volkswagen Fall Junior Classic returns
to the Tennis Manitoba Junior Tour in 2008.
Glendale Golf
& Country Club will host the tournament with U12/U16
events taking place September 12-18 and U14/U18 age
categories on September 19-25. Players residing in Manitoba
that participate in the VW Auto Haus Volkswagen Junior
Classic will gain valuable points used for selection
to the Canadian Junior Nationals.
Last year Glendale attracted close to 200 participants
to their Rookie Tour tournaments, with most events geared
towards entry level players. In 2008 Glendale plans
to evolve its Rookie events and expand towards higher
levels of competition by introducing four Master Series
Challengers. The unique format of the Master Series
Challenger tournaments will encourage players of all
levels to compete during the same competition, yet within
their own skill level groupings.
Glendale will host the Master Series Challengers a month
apart to allow junior players the time to practice and
seek improvement between tournaments. Top ranked Manitoba
Open player Doug DeVriendt plans to participate in match
play as well as meet with juniors participating at the
Master Series Challengers. “We see the value of Doug's
participation, being around on the next court, or in
the players lounge, as major motivation for Manitoba
juniors to stay involved in the great game of tennis”
states tournament director George Kylar.
