(Tennis Canada)
Canada's future tennis stars will strut their stuff
on the national stage in the coming weeks as the 2008
Canadian Indoor Championships get underway in various
cities across the country.
First up are the Under 12 and Under 16 championships,
which began this past weekend and run until April 4.
The tournaments began with a team event over the weekend
and then the players will compete for singles titles.
Competitors in the U16 category are contesting the national
title at Uniprix Stadium in Montreal and the field is
loaded with talent. Highlighting the boys event is 13-year
old Edward Nguyen (Ottawa), a national training centre
(NTC) participant who captured the U14 national indoor
title last season and the U12 title in 2006. Earlier
this year, he became the first Canadian male to win
Les Petits As in Tarbes, France, earning himself one
of the most prestigious international titles for under-14
players. Also in the draw is last year’s U14 finalist
Andrew Ochotta (Pickering, Ontario), who reached his
first ITF main draw two weeks ago at the Panama Bowl.
Other notables to keep an eye on are Panav Jha (Laval,
Quebec), Damien David (L'Assomption, Quebec), Nikolai
Haessig (Vancouver), Filip Peliwo (North Vancouver,
British Columbia), and Victor Hoang (Mississauga, Ontario).
On the girls' side, NTC participants Elisabeth Abanda
(Montreal), Laurie Gingras (Beauport, Quebec), Marianne
Jodoin (Varennes, Quebec) and Emma Onila (Mississauga,
Ontario) are all entered in the draw. Jodoin is the
defending champion of the event and will be looking
to hang on to her title for another year, but she will
be in tough against some stiff competition from her
countrywomen. Also competing for the crown is Louise
Kwong (Toronto). She is the youngest player in the draw,
having turned 13 just a couple of months ago, and she
comes into the tournament as last year's U12 girls champion.
Meanwhile, Canada's youngest talents in the U12 category
are playing at The Tennis Academy in Calgary. For many
of them, this is their first opportunity to compete
against the best from around the country. All four of
last year's finalists are no longer in the draw, so
the field is wide open for a fresh face to stake their
claim as the one to beat for this age category. Key
players to watch include Tim Portnov (New Westminster,
British Columbia) in the boys' draw and Daniella Silva
(Winnipeg), Francoise Abanda (Montreal) and Katherine
Surin (Blainville, Quebec) in the girls' event.
The U14 and Metro Label U18 Canadian Indoor Championships
will be held the following week, from April 6-12 at
the Saville Sports Centre in Edmonton and the Mayfair
Parkway Racquet and Fitness Club in Markham, Ontario,
respectively.
The indoor national championships give Canada's top
juniors an opportunity to shine in their home country.
It is also a chance for Canadian tennis fans to see
the up-and-comers that one day may become stars on the
professional circuits. The draws this year feature a
number of talented youngsters, guaranteeing exciting
tennis for the next couple of weeks.
"Canadian junior tennis is on the rise, as can be seen
by so many strong international performances recently.
I look forward to watching our talented Canadian juniors
vie for the Indoor Junior national titles," said Janet
Petras, Tennis Canada's manager of national events.

Winnipeg, MB (TM)
– Daniella Silva was chosen to go with Tennis Canada
coach Andre Labelle and train with other U12’s on a
European tour. Trip selection was based on performance
in a U12 National Camp held last January. This is the
first time someone from Manitoba has represented Tennis
Canada in Europe.
The 3 week trip started with training sessions and a
tournament with local players. Daniella and Canadian
companion Francoise Abanda from Montreal each won 3
matches before playing each other in the final.
During the final 10 days the juniors prepared the Super
12, an international tournament held in Auray. About
30 countries were represented, most players originated
from Europe, with some travelling from Africa, China,
United States and Canada. Past winners of the Super
12 include well known professional players such as Rafael
Nadal, Oliver Rochus, Paul-Henri Mathieu, Andy Murray
and Kim Clijsters.
In the girl’s single draw, there were 36 girls in the
qualifying rounds, 64 in the main draw and 32 doubles
teams. Daniella and Francoise won the doubles final
6-2, 6-0 against Sarlota Cesnekova (Slovakia) and Belinda
Bencic (Slovakia). The Canadian duo was unstoppable
going the entire tournament without dropping a single
set.
In the singles competition, Daniella was defeated in
the main draw 6-3, 6-4 to Teodora Rotaru of Romania
and lost in the consolations to Lou Adler of France
6-4, 6-4.
Congratulations Daniella, you have made us all proud.

Winnipeg, MB (TM)
– The Winnipeg Lawn Tennis Club will play host to the
Manitoba Junior Open, June 23-27. The tournament is
being revived after a five year absence on the schedule.
The Manitoba Junior Open will be one of the tournaments
used to determine the players that will earn a position
in the Outdoor Junior Nationals qualifier. In addition,
as this will be the showcase junior tournament of the
summer, players will earn more points than they would
in a typical tournament on the Tennis Manitoba Junior
Tour.
Participants will have the option of playing two singles
events, which will help those players looking ahead
to making a move to the next age group in preparation
for the 2009 Indoor Junior Nationals. Results of the
Manitoba Junior Open will also be sent to Tennis Canada
and used toward a National Junior Ranking for those
players that have represented Manitoba at Junior Nationals.

Tennis Participation
is on the Rise in Canada
|
|
|
|
|
Sun Mar 9'08 |
|
|
|
|
| |
|
Winnipeg, MB (TM) – The number of tennis
players in Canada grew to 1.8 million in 2007, according
to the last annual study conducted by the
Print Measurement
Bureau (PMB), a non-profit association. PMB, which
was established in 1973, is Canada's leading syndicated
study for data on print readership, non-print media
exposure, product usage and lifestyles.
The PMB results indicate that almost
1.8 million Canadians age 12+ played tennis at least
1 time per month in season. Trending from 2001-02 to
2004-05 shows an overall increase in tennis participation
by +18%. In addition, the average age of tennis participants
is skewing younger in Canada. The recent increase in
tennis participation is strongly attributed to an increase
in participation among teens.
The news is also positive in the United States, where
the
Tennis Industry Association (TIA) reports that the
number of tennis players grew to 25.1 million in 2007.
It's the first time since 1999 that participation has
topped 25 million players.
The 2007 Tennis Participation Study
is one component of the new Tennis Health Index. Although
final numbers on tennis industry growth won’t be in
for a few more months, year-in-review figures—based
on data from the TIA, USTA, Taylor Research, and Sports
Marketing Surveys—are looking strong. Other highlights
include:
-
Adult league programming jumped from 11.6 hours
per week in 2005 to 13.3 hours per
week in 2007.
-
Racquet shipments to retailers are up 37 percent
and ball shipments are up 14 percent
since 2003.
-
Sales of youth racquets show the biggest gains,
with a 50 percent increase since 2003.
