Toronto, ON (Tennis
Canada) – Last week could not have gone any better for
wheelchair athlete Lee Carter (Winnipeg) as he collected
both the singles and doubles trophies at the USTA Southwest
Desert Wheelchair Classic held in Tucson, Arizona.
Playing in his first tournament of the season, Carter
was dominant from start to finish in the singles event.
The top seed breezed through the draw, dropping only
10 games in three matches to clinch the title. His run
included a 6-1, 6-0 thrashing of No. 2 seed Paul Moran
(USA) in the semis and a solid victory over No. 4 Anthony
Anderson (USA) in the quarter-finals.
Fellow Canadian Corey Blatchford (Saskatoon) also reached
the final four in the singles draw. In the quarters,
he posted a huge 7-5, 6-1 triumph over No. 3 seed Anthony
Lara (USA), a player ranked more than 40 spots higher
in the NEC Wheelchair Rankings but fell to Moran in
the semis to end his title hopes.
In doubles, Carter and Blatchford played together and
won the championship. After a bye in the quarters, the
top-seeded duo faced the determined American tandem
of Marty Anderson and Shane Everitt-Sharpe in the semis.
The Canadians were a little shaky in the first set,
dropping it 6-4, but rallied to take the match in perfect
fashion as they won the remaining two sets 6-0, 6-0.
They had an easier time in the final, cruising to a
straight-sets victory over Anthony Anderson and Lara.
Over on the women’s side, Annie Morissette (Montreal)
got an unlucky break as she drew top seed Karin Korb
(USA) in the first round and was defeated in straight
sets.

Silva Selected

Winnipeg, MB (TM)
– Daniella Silva has been selected to join 3 other U12
players for the France Tour. The players were chosen
based on their performance in the U12 National Camp
held in January. This is the first time an individual
from Manitoba has represented Tennis Canada in Europe.
Daniella has been a member of Tennis Manitoba’s Provincial
Team for the past 3 years.
This is Daniella’s second year on the National Team
and she is the only player from the prairies (Manitoba,
Saskatchewan and Alberta) on the team. The trip involves
playing in a top international U12 tournament, training
and playing challenge matches with the top British U12
players. She will likely head into the upcoming Indoor
Nationals as the #2 seed in the girls U12 draw. At the
2007 U12 Outdoor Junior Nationals in Mont Tremblant,
Quebec, Daniella finished 7th. She has been participating
in Junior Nationals since 2005, when she was only 9
years old.
Daniella’s coach, Jared Connell, speaks highly of his
prize pupil. “As a player, Dani is a pleasure to work
with,” says Connell. “I have been fortunate to work
with Dani for 4 years now. From my first session with
her she had something special: a true passion and love
for the sport, and she is a tenacious/fierce competitor.
The word to describe Dani on court is feisty. I hope
she never loses that quality. Dani has a work ethic
second to none. Most of the concern I have with her
is that she sometimes works too much. Physical size
will always be an issue for Dani so her game is centered
around solid footwork, smart court positioning (playing
balls early, near the baseline) and variety. She plays
all areas of the game quite well but what separates
her from the rest is her ability to will the big shot
at the big time.”
Daniella will be leaving February 15 and returning March
2. Tennis Manitoba wishes her the best of luck!

Winnipeg, MB (TM)
– The Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame has announced that
James Ioanidis, a native of Portage la Prairie, will
be inducted into the Hall of Fame at a ceremony on April
26th in his hometown.
Ioanidis was inducted into the Manitoba Tennis Hall
of Fame last October in a moving ceremony attended by
family and friends at the Sun Center at Winnipeg Stadium.
He was one of only two Manitobans ever selected by Tennis
Canada for the Davis Cup trials. He also reached the
second round of the Canadian Tennis Championships in
1964 where he battled one of the greatest tennis players
of all time, Roy Emerson of Australia. He gave Emerson
all he could handle, falling 8-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Ioanidis captured 5 Manitoba Open Singles Championships
and was the dominant player in the province for many
years.See also...

Portage la Prairie, MB (Joey Payeur,
The Daily Graphic)
Joanne Ioanidis flew all the way from Quebec to Portage
la Prairie just for a press conference. She wouldn’t
have missed it for the world and she will be glad to
return to Portage in less than three months.
The widow of former Portager Jimmy Ioanidis was on hand,
along with two of Jimmy’s sisters who live in Manitoba,
for the official announcement of Jim as one of the seven
individuals who will be inducted into the Manitoba Sports
Hall of Fame in the athletes category at the second
annual regional induction ceremonies on April 26 at
the Portage Curling Club and Canad Inns Portage.
Three individuals will be inducted in the builders category,
along with two teams, including the 1972-73 Centennial
Cup national champion Portage Terriers hockey team.
But for all the happy faces at Canad Inns Portage yesterday
for the announcement, Joanne’s shone with arguably the
most pride as she remembered her late husband, who was
the most successful player to ever come out of the Portage
tennis scene.
“It’s unbelievable. I’m speechless. It’s such an honour,”
said Joanne. “He was so dedicated to tennis. But he
was also such a devoted family man to me and our four
kids.
“He was always lending a helping hand to someone ...
and he was famous for his wonderful smile. When he walked
into a room, he lit up the room. He was a unique individual
who left his mark on everyone he met.”
Jimmy, who died on Oct. 23 at the age of 65, first hit
the courts at the Island Park Tennis Club (now Portage
Tennis Club) as an 11 year old in 1948.
He went on to win three consecutive Winnipeg and District
junior singles championships, as well as several mixed
championships before becoming one of the youngest to
ever hold the Manitoba Open men’s singles crown at age
19, a title he won five consecutive years. He also won
numerous doubles and mixed doubles championships during
his time in Manitoba.
Ioanidis, who was also inducted into the Manitoba Tennis
Hall of Fame last year, was eventually selected to attend
trials for the junior Davis Cup squad in Ottawa in 1959
and then the senior trials in 1964 after he and Joanne
moved to Montreal.
But his career highlight may have come in defeat during
that same year.
“Jim went up against Roy Emerson in the first round
of the Canadian Open championships,” recalled Joanne
about her husband facing the Australian, an International
Tennis Hall of Famer and 12-time Grand Slam singles
champion who won 55 straight matches on the way to an
incredible 109-6 record that year.
“Jim was leading 6-5 in the first set, but lost 8-6
and went on to lose the match. But the next day in the
paper, the headlines read, ‘Emerson Extended by Ioanidis.’
That was a pretty great moment.”
Tickets for the induction ceremonies are $60, with a
portion of the amount tax deductible. The tickets can
be bought at the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame offices
at 200 Main Street in Winnipeg; by phoning 925-5735
or by going online at
halloffame@sport.mb.ca.
Only 600 tickets will be available.

Children's Fitness
Tax Credit
|
|
|
|
|
Wed Feb 6'08 |
|
|
|
|
| |
|
Winnipeg, MB (TM) – Effective January
1, 2007, the Children’s Fitness Tax Credit will cover
eligible fees of up to $500 a year for parents with
children participating in physical activity programs.
The federal government proposed the credit in part due
to an alarming rise in obesity rates. The number of
overweight and obese Canadian children has nearly tripled
over the past two decades.
The tax credit applies to fees paid for "an eligible
program of physical activity" for children under the
age of 16 and is expected to cost the government $160
million a year.
Eligible activities are those in which "substantially
all of the activities undertaken include a significant
amount of physical activity that contributes to cardio-respiratory
endurance, plus one or more of: muscular strength, muscular
endurance, flexibility, balance."
Eligibility criteria includes:
-
For children 10 and younger, activities must last
for at least 30 minutes while those for older children
must last at least 60.
-
The eligible program must be at least eight weeks
long and provide for at least one session per week,
as described above.
-
For a camp program to be eligible, it would need
to last at least five consecutive days, during which
at least 50 per cent of the activity during the
program hours of each day would involve physical
activity.
-
In organizations such as golf clubs or clubs that
sponsor more than just physical activities, only
the portion of the membership fee that is activities-based
would be eligible. For family memberships, only
the part of the fee related to the child or children
is eligible.
-
Programs requiring the use of a motorized vehicle
are not eligible.
-
Fees charged for regular school phys-ed programs
are not eligible.
-
The credit can only be claimed for activities occurring
in 2007. Fees paid in 2006 do not qualify, even
if all or part of the activity takes place in 2007.
-
Children must be under 16 at any time in the year
when the parent is claiming the credit.
A child with a disability who is eligible
for the Disability Tax Credit (DTC), is also eligible
for the fitness credit, but the age for claiming it
will be raised to under 18. Parents can also claim "a
separate $500 non-refundable amount for DTC-eligible
children subject to spending a minimum of $100 on registration
fees for an eligible program."
