    Thu Jan 24'08

Winnipeg, MB (TM) – Kyla McNicol, a senior at the University of Central Florida, led the Golden Knights to a 25-10 record at the Florida Gulf Coast MLK / Johan Kriek Classic. McNicol had a prefect record at the tournament, notching three singles wins at either the No. 2 or No. 3 positions and four doubles victories with partner freshman Jenny Frisell.

Manitoba Communities Receive Tennis Canada Funding

The Wheat City Tennis Club located in Brandon, Manitoba is a recent participant in the Building Tennis Communities program sponsored by Tennis Canada.

    Wed Jan 16'08

Winnipeg, MB (TM) – Steinbach and Sargent Park will be receiving financial assistance from Tennis Canada in 2008 as part of the Building Tennis Communities initiative. The City of Steinbach, under the guidance of Community Champion Scott Masterson, is being granted $1200 to assist with instructor certification, mini-tennis programs in elementary schools and lesson programs at the public courts.

Romilyn LaCap has undertaken the role of Community Champion in Sargent Park and the community will have an additional $1500 to assist the keen group of volunteers in that community to develop a number of programs. Lessons for beginners, clinics for elementary schools, summer camps and tournaments will all take place at the brand new courts which are set to open this spring.

The Building Tennis Communities program was established by Tennis Canada in 2000 as a means of introducing new players to the game by bringing together three key components:

  1. a keen individual, known as the Community Champion, from within the community to spearhead programs,

  2. Tennis Pathway programs consisting of Try, Learn, Play and Compete initiatives, and

  3. Community Partners such as teachers, club owners, Parks and Recreation staff and the Provincial Tennis Association who assist the Community Champion in growing the game.

For further information on the Building Tennis Communities initiative visit www.tenniscanada.com and click on ‘Community Tennis’.
