Raising a Racquet for Kids

Dancevic, Bester & Ferreira coming to Winnipeg

Canada’s top player on the ATP Tour, Frank Dancevic, headlines the group of players coming to the Winnipeg Winter Club on November 26th for the 3rd Annual Tennis Manitoba Awards Banquet and Hall of Fame Dinner. The event is being dubbed Raising a Racquet for Kids, with all proceeds going toward the development of junior tennis in Manitoba.

Dancevic, a native of Niagara Falls, will be assisting with a junior clinic and taking part in a Pro-Am event, before taking to the court in a Doubles Exhibition, which will begin at 6:00pm. He will be joined by fellow Canadian and current ATP player, Philip Bester, and former ATP doubles standout, Ellis Ferreira of South Africa. The fourth participant in the doubles match will be announced at a later date.

His 2007 results reflect a breakout year for Dancevic as he reached a career-high ranking of 65 on the ATP Tour and recorded his first victory over a top 10 player, defeating Andy Roddick in the semi-finals in Indianapolis. He followed that up with a tremendous tournament on home soil, losing a hard-fought 3-set match to Rafael Nadal in the quarter-finals of the Masters Series in Montreal. Dancevic’s highlight in 2008 was a first round upset of world # 7 David Nalbandian at Wimbledon.

North Vancouver’s Philip Bester is a young player looking to make his mark on the ATP Tour after a fantastic final year of junior tennis in 2006, which saw him reach the final at the French Junior Open.

Ferreira’s career highlights include the 2000 Australian Open Doubles title with long-time partner Rick Leach, which led to a career-high # 5 ranking in doubles.

Full bios and career highlights of these players are available at www.atptennis.com or by clicking on player images to the right.

Tickets are priced at $80 per person with tax receipt availability for the maximum allowable amount. The Tennis Manitoba Awards Banquet has attracted capacity crowds the past two years. You won’t want to miss out on Manitoba’s tennis event of the year. Get your tickets by calling Tennis Manitoba at (204) 925-5659 or online at www.tennismanitoba.com\tickets

Junior Tour Update

Waschuk Sisters Dominate 2008 Junior Tour

It was a great year on the local tennis scene for Evann Waschuk. She was able to lock down the top ranking positions in both the U16 and U18 junior girls age categories with just over half a season of tournament play. In total Evann earned three championship titles after taking the top spot on the 2008 Tennis Manitoba Open Tour in the Women's Open Singles category.

To complete the family sweep, younger sister Kylie was able to hold on to both the junior girls U12 and U14 points race, needing the final Junior Tour match of the season to fend off her nearest challenger.

On the boys side, Sean Bailey was able to establish himself as the top junior boy in the province while new comer Igal Mostkov made an immediate impact in the U16 points race. Both Jeremy Gunn and Kevin Kylar added some drama in their age categories, taking the points lead after the final Junior Tour tournament recently held at Glendale Golf & Country Club.

The 2008 Tennis Manitoba Junior Tour Champions are:

    U12 Girls Kylie Waschuk
    U14 Girls Kylie Waschuk
    U16 Girls Evann Waschuk
    U18 Girls Evann Waschuk

    U12 Boys Jeremy Gunn
    U14 Boys Kevin Kylar
    U16 Boys Igal Mostkov
    U18 Boys Sean Bailey

The Tennis Manitoba Junior Tour experienced superb growth in 2008, adding a new stop at Sargent Park Tennis Center and reviving the Auto Haus Volkswagen Fall Junior Classic and Manitoba Junior Open. During the 8 tournaments there were 88 events run with a total of 373 player registrations – an 82% growth over the 2007 season.

Rogers Rankings – Adding up wins

By now you have heard the news that Tennis Manitoba will be teaming up with Tennis Canada and the other provincial tennis associations to launch the new Rogers Rankings head-to-head national ranking system on January 1, 2009. The system will award points to players based on quality of wins, and deduct points in a similar manner.

How does this impact you, a player that participates in tournaments on the Tennis Manitoba Open / Junior Tours? If maintaining a national ranking position is important to you, then you’ll be happy to learn that each match can generate ranking points.
