Raising a Racquet for Kids

2008 Tennis Manitoba Awards Banquet

Raising a Racquet for KidsThe Manitoba tennis community will be Raising a Racquet for Kids on Wednesday, November 26th at the Winnipeg Winter Club as we gather to celebrate the achievements of our top players and recognize the outstanding contributions of our 2008 Manitoba Tennis Hall of Fame inductees.

Continuing on the successes of the 2006 and 2007 Tennis Manitoba Awards Banquets, the Raising a Racquet for Kids event will feature a doubles exhibition match with professional ATP players. Additional activities include a clinic for Manitoba’s top junior players and an opportunity for individuals to participate in Pro-Am doubles matches. Available positions for the Pro-Am play are limited and can be purchased from Tennis Manitoba on a first come basis. Stay tuned for an announcement of the participating professional players.

Proceeds from the evening will support junior tennis development in Manitoba, with funds going towards junior competition travel expenses and training camps, as well as development programs for kids under the age of 12 years. Those wishing to support Raising a Racquet for Kids can do so by donating gifts for the live and silent auctions, or by becoming an event sponsor. Sponsors contributions will be acknowledged at the event and included in the event program, Tennis Manitoba web site and monthly newsletters. To contact Tennis Manitoba on how you can participate click here.

Tickets are priced at $80 per person with tax receipt availability for the maximum allowable amount. The Tennis Manitoba Awards Banquet has attracted capacity crowds the past two years. You won’t want to miss out on Manitoba’s tennis event of the year. Get your tickets by calling Tennis Manitoba at (204) 925-5659 or online at www.tennismanitoba.com\tickets

Lee CarterCarter looks to serve up winner at Paralympics

Lee Carter is currently playing some of the best tennis of his young career — and the timing couldn’t be better.

The No. 1-ranked wheelchair tennis player in Canada, Carter is fresh off a win at the Canadian Open Wheelchair Tennis Championships, held Aug. 14 to 17 in Hamilton. He defeated Jon Rydberg, the 12th-ranked player in the world, by scores of 7-6, 3-6, 6-4.

The upset victory is a good omen given the fact the St. Vital product is priming himself for his first-ever appearance at the Paralympic Games, to be held Sept. 7 to 16 in Beijing, China.

National Rankings

Rogers Rankings to launch in 2009

Tennis Canada in partnership with the provincial tennis associations (PTAs), will launch the Rogers Rankings on January 1, 2009. This new and enhanced ranking system is based on the proven Chess Elo ranking system and has been developed and used with exceptional accuracy by the Quebec Tennis Federation for over twenty-five years.

The Rogers Rankings will allow all competitors to compare themselves to the nation’s top players. Similar systems have also been in use in Spain and France. The Rogers Rankings system will award points to players based on quality of wins (i.e. head-to-head results) versus rounds won in a tournament.
