Top Point Earners to be Recognized
at Awards Banquet

Tennis
Manitoba will be recognizing the 2008 points
leaders when the tennis community gathers
for the Tennis Manitoba Awards Banquet on
Wednesday, November 26th at the Canad Inns
Polo Park. [NOTE:

The top juniors and adults in every category
will be honored, based on the tournament
results from October, 2007 to September,
2008. The final standings in the adult events
will be determined at the conclusion of
the
Manitoba Indoor
Tennis Championships
to be held at Taylor Tennis September 2-7.
The current Tennis Manitoba Open Tour point standings
for Open, 4.5, and 3.5 categories are available
by clicking
here.
The junior winners will be determined by
adding the points accumulated at the following
tournaments: Kids Dental Junior Open, Big
Sand Junior Classic, World of Water Junior
Open, Tuxedo Junior Open, Manitoba Junior
Open, LM Architectural Group Junior Open,
Sargent Park Junior Cup and the Auto Haus
Volkswagen Fall Junior Classic. The
Sargent Park Junior Cup and
Auto Haus Volkswagen Fall Junior Classic
tournament at Glendale will both be played
in September. The current Junior Tour standings

Open Tour Update
 Sargent
Park Tennis Back on the Map
The Sargent
Park Tennis Center played host to an Open tournament
for the first time in over a decade, as the Sargent
Park Open concluded this past weekend. The members
served as great hosts, welcoming the tennis community
to Winnipeg’s newest tennis facility, complete with
friendly volunteers, great food and the blessing
of great weather all week.

Sweeps 3 Events at Tuxedo Open
Alexa Zayac
was dominant at her home club, winning three Open
events at the Tuxedo Open. She defeated Evann Waschuk
to win the Women’s Open Singles Championship and
added two doubles titles as well, winning the Women’s
Open Doubles event with Kylie Waschuk and taking
home the Mixed Doubles crown with partner Andrew
Boumford.

Wins Twice, Mancer Wins Open
Clarissa Chen
was a double winner at the Winnipeg Lawn Tennis
Club Open tournament, claiming the Women’s Open
Singles crown and teaming up with Sean Bailey to
take home the Mixed Open Doubles title. Evan Mancer
earned the Men’s Open Singles Championship and Marc
Lloyd was victorious in the Men’s 4.5 Singles event.

Kyla McNicol
was the big winner at the 2008 Arby’s Manitoba Open,
taking home the Singles and Doubles title on Sunday
to go along with the Mixed Doubles Championship
that she earned on Saturday.

 2009
Canada Summer Games Tryouts
The 2009 Canada Summer
Games will be held next August in Prince Edward Island.
This is a tremendous opportunity for our top juniors to
represent Manitoba against the top players from across Canada.
Tennis Manitoba is responsible for sending a team consisting
of 4 males and 4 females to the Games and the team members
will be accompanied by the Head Coach, Peter Otto, and a
manager to be named later.
The first step in the process of team selection will consist
of a tryout camp which will be used to select a training
team of 12 players. Attendance at the tryouts is by invitation
only for junior players born in 1991 or later.

2008 Junior Tour Finale
The Tennis Manitoba Junior Tour is coming
to a close for the 2008 season with just the
Sargent Park Junior Cup and
Auto Haus Volkswagen Fall Junior Classic tournaments
remaining. Juniors are competing for the top points positions
in the various Junior Tour age categories. These tournaments
are also qualifying events used for selection to the 2009
Indoor Canadian Junior Nationals for junior players residing
in Manitoba. Players are encouraged to participate in the
age categories that they will be competing in for the 2009
Junior Tour season.

Winnipeg
Lawn Claims Interclub Championship
Winnipeg Lawn
Tennis Club captured the 2008 Men’s Interclub Championship,
defeating Kildonan Tennis Club in all three matches.
Tony Weekes and Tom Brown defeated David Scrapneck
and Harry Melnyk 6-0, 6-1 to win the 40s, Darrell
Bushuk and Wojtek Wozniak beat Chris Wiebe and Glen
Ziprick 6-1, 7-5 to win the 50s and Rick Borland
and Bill Rannard won the 60s with a 6-2, 6-0 victory
against Jan Arndt and Elgin Zelinski.

George Kylar
has been recognized as Coaching Manitoba's "Coach
of the Month" awards program for July 2008. George
has been coaching at the Glendale Golf & Country
Club for the past 25-years and his passion for the
game is still as strong as when he first started.
