Dairy Farmers promote "Everyday
Champions"
|
Tennis Canada Lands Major Sponsorship
Agreement with Dairy Farmers
|
Tennis
Canada working in partnership with the Provincial
Tennis Associations has secured a 3-year
agreement with Dairy Farmers of Canada to
recognize the “Everyday Tennis Champions”
who are enjoying the rewards of a healthy
and active lifestyle. This partnership is
a perfect fit, providing an exciting opportunity
to our tennis family and community to continue
promoting the health and well being benefits
of tennis and a sport for life.
The
grassroots component of the campaign in
Manitoba will include the grand opening
of the Sargent Park Tennis Center, the finals
day at the Manitoba Clay Court Championships
and Sargent Park Open.

Tennis
class a smash hit with youngsters
Recently
there were more than 1,200 children making
quite a "racquet" around Winnipeg tennis
courts as part of the Tennis Futures Program.
Now in its 12th year under teacher Bill
Serbin, the program is a field trip for
grades 3 to 6 students from select schools
in each school division and is a chance
for youngsters to learn tennis.
"It's a healthy, active field trip where
the kids are exposed to sport that they
can go out and play in the community with
their friends or against a wall," said Serbin,
a physical education teacher at John de
Graff School for five years and a certified
tennis coach. "They're learning all the
basic strokes to the game -- forehand, backhand,
serve, volley, smash, a lot of movement
skills -- which offers a multitude of benefits.
It's an Olympic sport, it's inclusive, as
you can play in a wheelchair, and it caters
to the very young and seniors."

has been hired as the Coach/Manager of the tennis
center and he is looking forward to organizing programs
for the members of the club and tennis enthusiasts
in the community.

12 Key Questions
for Young Athletes
In a publication prepared for Sport
Manitoba, local sport psychologists Cal Botterill
and Tom Patrick address 12 key questions young athletes
should be asking themselves in their development.
Their observations note that young and elite athletes
who enjoy the process of sport have a big advantage
over those worrying about outcomes. It's impossible
to fully focus on the process of performing well,
if one is worrying about outcomes. Motivation from
within (intrinsic motivation) is much more suited
to excellence and enjoyment than motivation for
outcomes. Enjoying sport for its own sake is much
more likely to produce excellence and enjoyment
than extrinsic motivation.
