Manitoba Junior Open Revived

The Winnipeg Lawn Tennis Club will play host to the Manitoba Junior Open, June 23-27. The tournament is being revived after a five year absence on the schedule.

The Manitoba Junior Open will be one of the tournaments used to determine the players that will earn a position in the Outdoor Junior Nationals qualifier. In addition, as this will be the showcase junior tournament of the summer, players will earn more points than they would in a typical tournament on the Tennis Manitoba Junior Tour.

Tennis Participation is on the Rise in Canada

The number of tennis players in Canada grew to 1.8 million in 2007, according to the last annual study conducted by the Print Measurement Bureau. Trending from 2001-02 to 2004-05 shows an overall increase in tennis participation by +18%. In addition, the average age of tennis participants is skewing younger in Canada. The recent increase in tennis participation is strongly attributed to an increase in participation among teens.
