Tennis now in Manitoba Hall of Fame

Ioanidis First Tennis Player to Enter Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame

The Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame has announced that James Ioanidis, a native of Portage la Prairie, will be inducted into the Hall of Fame at a ceremony on April 26th in his hometown. Ioanidis captured 5 Manitoba Open Singles Championships and was the dominant player in the province for many years.

James Ioanidis was inducted into the Tennis Manitoba Hall of Fame in the fall of 2007.

 

Junior Tour Update

Big Sand next stop for Junior Tour

The next stop for the 2008 Tennis Manitoba Junior Tour is at Taylor Tennis for the Big Sand Junior Classic which runs March 21-23, 2008. This is a qualifying event used for selection to the 2008 Outdoor Junior Nationals for junior players residing in Manitoba. The tournament should also provide an excellent tune-up opportunity for those juniors heading to the 2008 Indoor Junior Nationals scheduled March 29 - April 12, 2008. The entry deadline for the 2008 Big Sand Junior Classic is Friday, March 14th at 6pm.

Bailey and Trstenjak Claim Two Titles at Kids Dental Junior Open

Sean Bailey made it clear that he is the top junior player in Manitoba after winning the U18 Boys Singles championship at the Kids Dental Junior Open. He added the U18 Boys Doubles crown, teaming up with Alex Lesiuk to defeat Eric Pollard and Igal Mostkov.

Katie Trstenjak was also a double winner, partnering with Lea Savatic to win the U14 Girls Doubles title. This came after a hard fought 7-6(3), 7-5 victory over Lana Tennenhouse in the U12 Girls Singles final.

Silva Selected to Represent Tennis Canada on Tour in France

Daniella Silva has been selected by Tennis Canada to join three other U12 players for a tennis development trip to France. The players were chosen based on their performance in a recent U12 National Camp. This is the first time an individual from Manitoba has represented Tennis Canada in Europe.

Carter Captures Pair of Titles in Arizona

Wheelchair athlete Lee Carter of Winnipeg collected both the singles and doubles trophies at the USTA Southwest Desert Wheelchair Classic held in Tucson, Arizona. Playing in his first tournament of the season, Carter was dominant from start to finish in the singles event. The top seed breezed through the draw, dropping only 10 games in three matches to clinch the title.
