The 2008 Tennis Manitoba tournament schedule gets underway February 14-17, 2008. Formerly the Winnipeg Winter Club Junior Open, the 2008 Kids Dental Junior Open Tennis Championships is a qualifying event used for selection to the 2008 Junior Nationals for junior players residing in Manitoba. This is the last opportunity for juniors in Manitoba to earn qualifying points for the Manitoba Junior Indoor National Qualifier scheduled February 28 - March 2, 2008. The entry deadline is Thursday, February 7th at 6pm.

} Tennis Manitoba Junior Tour schedule

Steinbach and Sargent Park will be receiving financial assistance from Tennis Canada in 2008 as part of the Building Tennis Communities initiative. The City of Steinbach, under the guidance of Community Champion Scott Masterson, is being granted $1200 to assist with instructor certification, mini-tennis programs in elementary schools and lesson programs at the public courts.

Romilyn LaCap has undertaken the role of Community Champion in Sargent Park and the community will have an additional $1500 to assist the keen group of volunteers in that community to develop a number of programs. Lessons for beginners, clinics for elementary schools, summer camps and tournaments will all take place at the brand new courts which are set to open this spring.

Kyla McNicol, a senior at the University of Central Florida, led the Golden Knights to a 25-10 record at the Florida Gulf Coast MLK / Johan Kriek Classic. McNicol had a prefect record at the tournament, notching three singles wins at either the No. 2 or No. 3 positions and four doubles victories with partner freshman Jenny Frisell.

McNicol did not drop a set in her three singles victories and looks to carry this momentum forward as UCF takes on rival Florida in the opening of its dual-match season.

Tennis Manitoba is seeking volunteers to serve as Tour Commissioners for the 2008 tournament season. Each Tour Commissioner will act as a liaison between Tennis Manitoba and the players on the Tour.
