Important Changes to 2008 Indoor Junior Nationals Qualifying

    Sat Dec 15'07
Winnipeg, MB (TM) – An agreement has been reached by Tennis Manitoba and Tennis Saskatchewan to discontinue the Prairie Regionals in 2008. Each province will undertake its own qualifying process to determine the players that will go to Junior Nationals.

To determine the players that will represent Manitoba at Junior Nationals, a 4-player round-robin will be held for each gender in each age group. The top 3 players in each age group of each gender in the point standings will qualify for the round-robin. The fourth position will be determined either by point standings or successful challenge, as determined by Tennis Manitoba, which will result in a wildcard playoff. Players wishing to challenge for the fourth round-robin position must notify Tennis Manitoba in writing.

The two players with the best records after completion of the round-robin will qualify for Junior Nationals.

The Winnipeg Winter Club Junior Open, scheduled for February 14-17, will be the last chance for players to earn points in an effort to move up the standings. The final standings will include results from the following tournaments:

2007 Big Sand Junior Classic hosted by Taylor Tennis

2007 World of Water Junior Open hosted by Kildonan Tennis Club

2007 Tuxedo Junior Open hosted by Tuxedo Tennis Club

2007 LM Architectural Group Junior Open hosted by Taylor Tennis

2008 Winnipeg Winter Club Junior Open hosted by the Winter Club.

The dates for the round-robin to determine the players that qualify for Junior Nationals are still being negotiated with Taylor Tennis and the Winter Club. The competition will take place in late February or early March and the dates will be posted on the website as soon as they are confirmed.

Players Benefit from Tennis Canada Presence at Prairie Regrouping

    Fri Dec 14'07

Winnipeg, MB (TM) – As part of the ongoing relationship between Manitoba and Saskatchewan, the top U12 players from each province participated in a recent regrouping in Winnipeg. The players worked hard under the watchful eye of Bob Brett, who has made a commitment to visiting the Prairie Region several times throughout the winter months.

In addition, the players were put through their paces by Tennis Canada’s Richard Crowell, who conducted fitness tests for all of the players. It was very important for the young athletes to see where they stack up compared to National and International standards and what areas they need to focus on to improve their fitness level, which will have a major impact on their overall tennis game.

Richard also conducted fitness tests for all of Tennis Manitoba’s U14-U18 Provincial Team members and worked with the junior players at the Winnipeg Winter Club Academy, which is headed up by Provincial Coach, Peter Otto.

The support from Tennis Canada is greatly appreciated and the players and coaches look forward to putting in the hard work that is necessary to reach the next level of performance.
