2007 Tennis Manitoba Hall of Fame inductee James Ioanidis

Winnipeg, MB (TM) – James Ioanidis, winner of 5 Manitoba Open Men’s Singles titles, will be inducted into the Manitoba Tennis Hall of Fame on Thursday, October 4th at the Sun Center at Canad Inns Stadium in conjunction with the Tennis Manitoba Awards Banquet presented by CIBC Wood Gundy.

Ioanidis was one of only two Manitobans ever selected by Tennis Canada for the Davis Cup trials. He also reached the second round of the Canadian Tennis Championships in 1964 where he battled one of the greatest tennis players of all time, Roy Emerson of Australia. He gave Emerson all he could handle, falling 8-6, 6-3, 6-3. To read a detailed biography of James Ioanidis click here.

The Hall of Fame inductions will be the highlight of the 2007 Tennis Manitoba Awards Banquet. Prior to the banquet spectators are invited to Taylor Tennis for a Doubles Exhibition featuring former ATP Tour star and Wimbledon semi-finalist, David Wheaton. Entry for the doubles match is free with your Awards Banquet ticket, which can be purchased for $75 by contacting Tennis Manitoba at 925-5660. Those interested in the Doubles Exhibition only can purchase tickets for $10.

Auto Haus VW Fall Junior Classic is Canceled

Indoor Junior National Qualifying Tournament

Winnipeg, MB (TM) – Glendale Golf & Country Club has made a decision to cancel the Auto Haus VW Fall Junior Classic. The Junior Tour tournament was scheduled to be held September 17-27. The Auto Haus VW Fall Junior Challenger, which is part of the Tennis Manitoba Rookie Tour, will continue to be held as previously scheduled.

Tennis Manitoba will endeavor to find a replacement for this Junior Tour tournament. In the meantime, the next scheduled tournament on the Junior Tour is the Winter Club Junior Open which will be held in February, 2008.

DeVriendt, Kirbyson and LaCap to Join Wheaton in Doubles Exhibition

 

David Wheaton will be featured in a doubles exhibition match on October 4th at Taylor Tennis as part of the 2007 Tennis Manitoba Awards Banquet festivities.

Winnipeg, MB (TM) – After winning the Men’s Open Doubles title at the Manitoba Indoor Tennis Championships at Taylor Tennis on the weekend, Geoff Kirbyson and Sean LaCap have secured their places in the Doubles Exhibition with former ATP star David Wheaton. They will be joined by Doug DeVriendt, who once again captured the top spot in the Men’s Doubles points race.

The top three finishers in the points race, based on the results of tournaments from June to September, qualified to take to the court with Wheaton. The match will take place on Thursday, October 4th at 4:00pm at Taylor Tennis prior to the Tennis Manitoba Awards Banquet.

The Awards Banquet will be held at the Sun Center at Canad Inns Stadium, with cocktails at 6:00pm and dinner and awards at 6:30pm. Tickets are available at the Tennis Manitoba office by calling 925-5660. Banquet tickets include admission to the doubles match.

Be sure to join us for an exciting hour of tennis followed by an evening of celebration as we recognize the accomplishments of our top players and induct three members of the tennis community into the Manitoba Tennis Hall of Fame.
