Winnipeg, MB (TM)
– After many years and dozens of tournaments, Jared
Connell broke through on the weekend and captured the
Men’s Open Singles title at the Winnipeg Lawn Tennis
Club Open. It marked the first ever Open Singles championship
for Connell and it came at the expense of Evan Mancer
by scores of 7-6, 3-6, 6-3. It did not come easy for
Connell as he was forced to save several match points
in his semi-final victory over Roland Burrell, eventually
emerging from that match with a 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(4) win.
Connell was, however, foiled in his attempt to win the
Men’s Open Doubles championship, as he and his partner,
Hart Pollock, went down to defeat at the hands of Peter
Otto and Sean Bailey by a score of 7-5, 6-4. It was
the first tournament win in many years for Otto, who
has shifted his focus to coaching. This was icing on
the cake after a very successful Western Canada Summer
Games in which he led Team Manitoba to a Silver Medal
in the team competition. Bailey was a strong leader
on that team, as he partnered with Eric Pollard to take
home the Silver Medal in Men’s Doubles.
It was a very successful tournament for Alexa Zayac
who captured all three Open events that she entered.
She earned the Women’s Singles title with a 6-3, 6-1
win over Anita Paskvalin and then teamed up with Paskvalin
to defeat Ainsley Bishop and Lori Mann in the Women’s
Doubles Championship match. Zayac also took to the court
with Geoff Kirbyson in Mixed Doubles and the pair earned
a hard fought 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 win over Paskvalin and Pollock.
The complete list of winners was as follows:

Winnipeg, MB (TM) – When Head Coach
Peter Otto was asked several weeks ago about his goal
for the 2007 Western Canada Summer Games, he responded
by saying “we’re looking to win a Silver Medal by beating
Alberta”. That’s exactly what happened as Team Manitoba
defeated Team Alberta in their own backyard, winning
the Silver Medal at the 2007 Western Canada Summer Games
in Edmonton.
Together with Team Manager Kyla McNicol and Wheelchair
Coach Barry Bruce, Otto guided Manitoba to its best
ever finish at the Western Canada Summer Games.
The following Manitobans won Silver Medals:
Evann Waschuk - Women’s Singles
Sean Bailey & Eric Pollard - Men’s Doubles
Clarissa Chen & Jeremy Trinidad - Mixed Doubles
Allen Mankewich - Wheelchair Singles
Allen Mankewich & Sam Unrau - Wheelchair Doubles
The following Manitobans won Bronze Medals:
Alexia Cholakis & Erika Fridrik - Women’s Doubles
Congratulations to all of the players and coaches on
this great result! A big thank you as well to Robert
Kennedy and Sean LaCap who provided tremendous support
as Assistant Coaches over the last 9 months and to Sport
Psychologist Louis Svenningsen for his assistance with
the mental side of the game.

Winnipeg, MB (TM) – In an effort to
further improve the skill development of our Western
Canada Summer Games (WCSG) training team members, Tennis
Manitoba arranged for biomechanical analysis by staff
of the Sport Biomechanics Laboratory at the University
of Manitoba. Using the Dartfish system (www.dartfish.com)
allows comparison of our athletes with athletes of world
and Olympic caliber, in terms of the movements utilized,
range of motion, sequence and timing of movements, and
speed of movements. This analysis will allow coaches
to determine the points in the skill (forehand, backhand,
serve, volley) at which the athletes might require refinement,
with the assistance of the biomechanics staff.
Competition for the WCSG tennis team starts today and
will continue until August 7th in Edmonton, Alberta.
The team, consisting of 4 boys and 4 girls, will compete
against teams from British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan
and the North West Territories.
