years of age or under that are not members of the
Tennis Manitoba Provincial Team. Matches will be
held on Sundays at Winnipeg Lawn Tennis Club,

2008 Launch of
the New Enhanced Unified National Ranking System
|
|
|
|
|
Tue May 8'07 |
|
|
|
|
| |
|
Toronto, ON (Tennis Canada) – We are
pleased to announce that Tennis Manitoba, Tennis Canada
and the Provincial Tennis Associations are unveiling
a new enhanced unified national ranking system that
will be launched in January 2008. This new enhanced
ranking system is a direct outcome of over three years
of meetings, research of international and national
best practices. The goal was to build a well organized
and accurate ranking and events management structure
to help promote competition at all levels. The entire
country will work from a customized common competitive
data base called BASELINE to manage events, integrate
schedules, plan calendars and unify rankings.
The new national ranking is based on the innovative
and proven CHESS ELO ranking system. Tennis Quebec has
been using this framework for over fifteen years with
exceptional ranking accuracy. The ELO ranking system
has been built into the new BASELINE management system,
using head-to-head (quality of wins) results to determine
rankings versus rounds won – thus making it so effective.
The BASELINE management system is web based, thus allowing
anyone with an internet connection the ability to track
their ranking, draws and view historical results as
events are being played. All sanctioned matches will
now count toward a player’s provincial and national
rankings at all levels. The new ranking system will
rank all players irrespective of age. Every player competing
nationwide will be able to compare themselves to Canada’s
top players, such as Frank Dancevic or Aleksandra Wozniak.
Rankings will be updated on a weekly basis and the information
may be filtered to meet provincial and national needs
(i.e. age specific, province and region).
Special thanks are in order to Jean-Francois Manibal,
Tennis Quebec’s Executive Director and Tan Qureshi,
President of Computan Ltd., in conjunction with Tennis
Canada and Provincial Association staff for developing
this system. We additionally thank the Ontario Tennis
Association for being the first province to adopt the
Baseline Events and People Management System.
Stay tuned as more details will be available as we approach
the January 2008 launch date!e!

Volunteers needed
for Tennis Futures Clinics
|
|
|
|
|
Mon May 7'07 |
|
|
|
|
| |
|
Winnipeg, MB (TM) – More than 1,000
children in grades 4-6 will be taking part in the Tennis
Futures clinics being organized at Winnipeg Lawn Tennis
Club (WLTC), Kildonan Tennis Club (KTC) and Tuxedo Tennis
Club (TTC), May 14-18. Bill Serbin, a physical education
teacher at John de Graff School and coordinator of the
Tennis Futures, has seen the program grow over the past
decade, to the point where three clubs are now needed
to host the 21 schools that will participate next week.
The growth has been fantastic for the sport of tennis,
but it has created some challenges, not the least of
which is the need for volunteer instructors.
A minimum of 10 instructors are needed each day and
with the large number of participants 20 instructors
would be ideal. On May 14-16 the clinics will take place
solely at the WLTC. On May 17 the clinics will be held
at WLTC, KTC and TTC. On May 18 the clinics will take
place at KTC and TTC. The clinics run from 10:00am-2:00pm
on each day. It is important to note that previous teaching
experience is not necessary. The most important quality
is a passion to see children be active and learn the
basics of tennis in a fun environment.
If you are able to volunteer your time to assist the
children at the Tennis Futures clinics please contact
Kris Robins at
kris.robins@tennismanitoba.com . Please note that
all volunteer instructors will also receive lunch each
day courtesy of Arby’s.

Winter Club erases
debt, readies for facelift
|
|

|

|
Winnipeg, MB (Winnipeg
Free Press, Wednesday, April 18, 2007: Section:
City Byline: Davina Pessagno)
THE Winnipeg Winter Club is out of debt and preparing
for a $250,000 facelift. Last November, the club
owed more than $430,000 to the City of Winnipeg
for three years of outstanding property taxes.
An emergency meeting was held -- and more than
93 per cent of members who attended voted in favour
of a membership increase and a one-time levy fee to
help the club.
"They believe in the future of the finest athletic
club in Winnipeg," Rob Guthrie, general manager
of the Winter Club, said Tuesday. "Since November,
the club has raised over $1 million." Despite a 15 per
cent jump in memberships fees, membership numbers
have stayed the same.
There are more than 800 members who currently use
the facility, and Guthrie hopes the planned facelift
will increase that number. From updated locker rooms
to fine cuisine prepared by a nationally renowned
chef, members can look forward to upgrades in every
corner of the club. "Seeing is Believing is the name
of the renovation project," said Guthrie. "Our members
are going to be pleased with the change."
Renovations are expected to start within a month
and should be completed by September. In the meantime
changes are already taking place. The ice rink was renamed
The Dominion Securities Centre earlier this month.
Ten advisers from RBC Dominion Securities will contribute
$70,000 over the next five years in financial
support. "The Winnipeg Winter Club is a multi-sport
and family-oriented club, so it fits what we like
to support," said Alan Dunnett, regional director
of RBC Dominion Securities and a member of the Winter
Club.
"It was our idea to focus sponsorship on supporting
youth hockey at the club. There are thousands
of youths involved in the hockey programs," said
Guthrie. "We have been an institute for developing fine,
young athletes into world renowned athletes for many
years."Want to get news like this
