Winter Club Senior Open Deadline Extended

Winnipeg, MB (TM) – The entry deadline for the Winnipeg Winter Club Senior Open has been extended to Sunday, March 25th at 7:00pm. Entries can be faxed to the Winter Club at 284-2567. For further information call 452-3311 ext. 108 or click here.

Prairie Regional Qualifying Moving to 52 Week System for 2008

Winnipeg, MB (TM) – Qualifying for the 2008 Indoor Prairie Regionals will be based on tournament results from the 52 weeks preceding the Prairie Regionals. The Big Sand Junior Classic at Taylor Tennis, April 6-8, will be the first qualifying tournament under the new system. Junior players that are attempting to qualify for the 2008 Indoor Prairie Regionals will need to take into consideration the age group that they will be eligible for in 2008.

Indoor Prairie Regional point standings for 2008 will be calculated by taking each player’s best 5 results from the following tournaments:

  • April 6-8: Big Sand Junior Classic

  • May 10-13: World of Water Junior Open

  • May 22-27: Tuxedo Junior Open

  • July 3-6: LM Architectural Group Junior Open

  • September 14-16: Wheat City Junior Open

  • September 17-27: Auto Haus VW Fall Junior Classic

  • January, 2008: Winter Club Junior Open.

New Date for Second Weekend of Instructor Course

Winnipeg, MB (TM) – Please take note that the second weekend of the upcoming Instructor Course has been changed to May 4-6. This course is the first level of Tennis Canada’s coaching certification program.

Individuals must be 15 years of age to take the Instructor Course, which includes 35 hours of instruction over two weekends. Course participants are given both a practical and playing/demonstration evaluation.

Chen, McPherson and Waschuk Lead Manitoba Contingent at Prairie Regionals

Winnipeg, MB (TM) – Manitoba players captured 17 of a possible 24 Junior Nationals spots after the dust settled at the Prairie Regionals in Saskatoon this past weekend. Clarissa Chen won the U16 Girls title, winning all four of her round-robin matches without dropping a set. Will McPherson defeated Alex Minuk 6-3, 6-1 to take the U14 Boys championship, while Evann Waschuk was victorious in the U14 Girls category after a 6-2, 2-1 (inj.) victory over Daniella Silva.

The following players will represent the Prairie Region at the Indoor Junior Nationals:

  • U14 Indoor Junior Nationals
    April 8-15 at Edmonton, AB

  • U16 Indoor Junior Nationals

Silva Dominates Doubles at Winter Club Junior Open

    Winnipeg, MB (TM) – Daniella Silva, a member of Canada’s U12 National Team, captured three doubles events as the Winnipeg Winter Club Junior Open came to a close. She teamed up with her sister, Jessica, to defeat Clarissa Chen and Jaime Peterson 9-3 in the U18 Girls Doubles final. Silva also partnered with Alexia Cholakis to take the U14 Girls Doubles championship, with a 9-1 victory over Emily Fridrik and Kylie Waschuk. Then she concluded the tournament by joining Will McPherson in beating Alexia Cholakis and Davis Hirsch 9-5 to win the U14 Mixed Doubles title.

Complete doubles results were as follows:

U14 Girls: Silva/Cholakis def. Fridrik/Waschuk 9-1
U18 Girls: Silva/Silva def. Chen/Peterson 9-3

U14 Boys: Gerstein/Minuk def. McPherson/Hirsch 9-8(5)
U18 Boys: Bailey/Ismath def. Trinidad/Pollard 9-3

U14 Mixed: Silva/McPherson def. Cholakis/Hirsch 9-5
U18 Mixed: Chen/Bailey def. Peterson/Pollard 9-4.
