Rookie Tour Debuts in 2007

Winnipeg, MB (TM) – In an effort to promote grassroots competitive tennis for entry-level junior players Tennis Manitoba will introduce a Rookie Tour this year, which will provide more opportunities for junior players to experience tournament play in a fun and friendly atmosphere.

The Rookie Tour will include the following tournaments:

  • May 10-14: Head Junior Open at Glendale Golf & Country Club

  • June 21-24: Technifibre Junior Classic at Glendale Golf & Country Club

  • July 24-26: Kildonan Rookie Challenger at Kildonan Tennis Club

  • August 7-9: Deer Lodge Rookie Open at Deer Lodge Tennis Club

  • August 14-16: Norwood Summer Tennis Slam at Norwood Tennis Club

  • August 28-30: Tuxedo Junior Rookie Championships at Tuxedo Tennis Club

  • September 17-27: Auto Haus Volkswagen Fall Junior Challenger at Glendale Golf & Country Club.

The top junior players in the province will be ineligible to participate in the Rookie Tour events. Full details regarding format and player eligibility will follow soon.

2007 Junior Tour Schedule Finalized

Winnipeg, MB (TM) – Tennis Manitoba has set the Junior Tour schedule, which includes tournaments that will be used as qualifiers for the 2007 Prairie Regionals. The Winnipeg Winter Club Junior Open, slated for February 8-11, will be the final qualifier for the 2007 Indoor Prairie Regionals.

At the conclusion of the Winter Club Junior Open, the top 4 boys and top 4 girls in the point standings in each age group will qualify to represent Manitoba at the Indoor Prairie Regionals in Saskatoon, March 9-11.

The three tournaments listed below will be used to determine the juniors that will represent our province at the Outdoor Prairie Regionals:

  • May 10-13: World of Water Junior Open at Kildonan Tennis Club

  • May 22-27: Tuxedo Junior Open at Tuxedo Tennis Club

  • July 3-6: LM Architectural Group Junior Open at Taylor Tennis.

The Outdoor Prairie Regionals will be held in Winnipeg July 16-18. The host clubs have yet to be determined. The allocation of points and the criteria for selection to the Outdoor Prairie Regionals will be announced at a later date.

The top point getters in each age category, based on results from all Junior Tour events in 2007, will once again be recognized at the Tennis Manitoba Awards Banquet in October.

Cholakis and Silva Victorious in Minneapolis

Alexia Cholakis (top) and Jessica Silva were victorious at the University of Minnesota.

Winnipeg, MB (TM) – Alexia Cholakis of Winnipeg defeated Madeline Buxton of Eden Prairie 6-0, 6-1 to capture the Girls 12 Singles title at the Baseline Tennis Center Winter Classic. Cholakis dropped only 2 games en route to the championship, which is held on the campus of the University of Minnesota.

Jessica Silva of Winnipeg earned the Girls 14 Singles championship, with a 7-6(3), 6-3 victory over top-seeded Amber Washington of St. Paul.

The 3rd place matches in both events were contested by Winnipeggers. Daniella Silva topped Jade Kirstein 6-4, 6-2 in the Girls 14s and Kylie Waschuk defeated Emily Fridrik 6-3, 6-4 in the Girls 12s.

Tennis Manitoba Senior Tour

Winnipeg, MB (TM) – A Senior Tour, for players over the age of 35, has been established for the 2007 season. The Tour will include four Tennis Manitoba sanctioned tournaments, with two scheduled to be played indoors and the other two at outdoor clubs. The schedule is as follows:

  • March 25-April 1: Winnipeg Winter Club Senior Open at Winnipeg Winter Club

  • May 22-27: Manitoba Senior Open at Winnipeg Lawn Tennis Club

  • August 22-26: Kildonan Senior Open at Kildonan Tennis Club

  • September 4-9: Nygard Senior Tournament at Taylor Tennis.

The top point earners in each age category, based on results from all of the Senior Tour events, will be recognized at the Tennis Manitoba Awards Banquet in October.

2007 TPA National Coaching Conference

Winnipeg, MB (TM) – The 2007 Tennis Professionals Association National Coaching Conference dates have been set for March 1-2, 2007. Speakers already confirmed include:

  • Louis Borfiga – Vice-President, High Performance Athlete Development

  • Andre Labelle – NTC (Montreal) Director and U12 Program Leader

  • Andre Parent – Tennis Canada Fitness Consultant

  • Louis Cayer – Consultant, Tennis Canada Coaching Certification and Master Course Conductor

  • Andrew Delaware – Communication Expert

  • Jeff McCarol – General Manager, Ontario Racquet Club

This Conference will be counted as a recertification opportunity. Additional information on speakers and presentations, along with registration information, will follow in the near future. Please check the TPA web site for additional details.

Tennis Manitoba 2007 Open Tour Schedule

Winnipeg, MB (TM) – Tennis Manitoba has set the schedule of Open Tournaments for 2007. As was the case last year the schedule will begin in Brandon with the Wheat City Hard Court Championships in early June. The highlight of the summer will once again be the Arby’s Manitoba Open, which will be held at the Kildonan Tennis Club, with $12,500 in prize money up for grabs.

The top point getters in each category, based on results from all Open tournaments up to and including the Manitoba Indoor Championships at Taylor, will once again be recognized at the Tennis Manitoba Awards Banquet in October.

The complete 2007 Open Tournament Schedule is as follows:

  • June 1-3: Wheat City Hard Court at Wheat City Tennis Club

  • June 4-10: Manitoba Clay Court Championships at Taylor Tennis

  • June 16-24: Deer Lodge Classic at Deer Lodge Tennis Club

  • July 6-15: Arby’s Manitoba Open at Kildonan Tennis Club

  • July 22-29: Tuxedo Open at Tuxedo Tennis Club

  • September 4-9: Manitoba Indoor Championships at Taylor Tennis

  • November 18-25: Winnipeg Indoor Open at Winnipeg Winter Club

Ahmed Farag (top) and Daniella Silva captured titles in Eden Prairie, MN.

Winnipeg, MB (TM) – Ahmed Farag won the Boys 16 Championship and Daniella Silva captured the Girls 14 Championship at the Flagship-BMW Holiday Season Junior Open in Eden Prairie, Minnesota. Silva won a tough 3-set battle with Katelyn Blumberg of Michigan in the final, prevailing 5-7, 7-6, 6-3. Farag was also pushed to the limit in the final, defeating Erik Nordahl of Bloomington, Minnesota 6-4, 2-6, 6-3.
