to Play in Winnipeg
|
DeVriendt, Kirbyson and LaCap to Join Wheaton in Doubles Exhibition
After
winning the Men’s Open Doubles title at the
Manitoba Indoor Tennis Championships at Taylor
Tennis, Geoff Kirbyson and Sean
LaCap have secured their places in the Doubles
Exhibition with former ATP star David Wheaton.
They will be joined by Doug DeVriendt, who once
again captured the top spot in the Men’s Doubles
points race.
The top three finishers in the points race,
based on the results of tournaments from June to
September, qualified to take to the court with
Wheaton. The match will take place on Thursday,
October 4th at 4:00pm at Taylor Tennis prior to
the Tennis Manitoba Awards Banquet.
The Awards Banquet will be held at the Sun
Center at Canad Inns Stadium, with cocktails at
6:00pm and dinner and awards at 6:30pm. Tickets
are available at the Tennis Manitoba office by
calling 925-5660. Banquet tickets include
admission to the doubles match.
Be sure to join us for an exciting hour of
tennis followed by an evening of celebration as
we recognize the accomplishments of our top
players and induct three members of the tennis
community into the Manitoba Tennis Hall of Fame.

Team Manitoba Earns Silver Medal at Western Canada Summer Games
When Head
Coach Peter Otto was asked about his goal for
the 2007 Western Canada Summer Games, he
responded by saying “we’re looking to win a
Silver Medal by beating Alberta”. That’s exactly
what happened as Team Manitoba defeated Team
Alberta in their own backyard, winning the
Silver Medal at the 2007 Western Canada Summer
Games in Edmonton.
Together with Team Manager Kyla McNicol and
Wheelchair Coach Barry Bruce, Otto guided
Manitoba to its best ever finish at the Western
Canada Summer Games.
The

Connell Earns First Ever Open Singles Title
After many years and dozens of tournaments,
Jared Connell broke through and captured the
Men’s Open Singles title at the Winnipeg Lawn
Tennis Club Open. It marked the first ever Open
Singles championship for Connell.

Leyden Dethrones McNicol, Baranowski Defeats DeVriendt
Carlene
Leyden of Houston, Texas pulled off the upset of
the tournament defeating the defending Women’s
Singles Champion, and 4-time winner of the
Manitoba Open, Kyla McNicol, in a thrilling
3-set final. Leyden prevailed 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 at
the Kildonan Tennis Club in the final of the
Arby’s Manitoba Open. For the 16 year-old it was
icing on the cake after teaming with Geoff
Kirbyson to win the Mixed Doubles title on
Saturday night.
Adam Baranowski of Toronto prevailed in the
Men’s Singles final, earning a hard fought 4-6,
6-4, 6-1 win over Winnipeg’s Doug DeVriendt.
DeVriendt exacted a measure of revenge as he and
his partner, Cristian Paiz of Guatemala,
combined to overcome Baranowski and his partner,
Matt Baccarani of Toronto, 6-2, 6-7 (4), 6-4 to
earn the Men’s Doubles title.
