Winnipeg, MB (TM) – Do you have an interest
in helping to shape the future of tennis in this province?
Tennis Manitoba is seeking volunteers who would like
to assist our committees in developing strategies and
programs that will grow the sport in Manitoba.
There are four committees that currently consist of
members of the Board of Directors. Each of these committees
will be undertaking several initiatives and would welcome
assistance from one or more members of the tennis community.
The Community Development Committee implements
programs aimed at attracting new players to the sport.
This includes the schools program, Building Tennis Communities
initiative and Parks and Recreation programs.
The Competitive Structure Committee oversees
the development of the Tournament Schedule, officiating
programs, rankings, leagues and progressive tennis.
The High Performance Committee deals with issues
pertaining to Junior and Senior Nationals, Western Canada
Summer Games, Provincial Team programs and Coaching
Development.
The Resource Development Committee develops communication
tools and marketing strategies to promote tennis. This
includes the website, newsletters, sponsorship packages
and the new Baseline system.
If you are interested in helping out as a volunteer
or would like further information about any of the committees,

Tennis player
Silva an 'incredible find'

Daniella Silva exudes
a confidence that belies her age.

Winnipeg, MB (Martin Zeilig, Winnipeg
Free Press, November 1, 2006) – Jared Connell has seen
a lot of talented young local tennis players over the
years, but he calls Daniella Silva something special.
"She's an incredible find and a rarity in Manitoba,''
said Tennis Manitoba's provincial coach, adding that
he works with Silva six days a week at the Taylor Tennis
Club.
"Athletically, she's quite advanced for her age. She
has a tremendous work ethic, focus and desire. I'm building
a foundation for her game for the future based on her
speed, mental toughness and ability to read the game,"
he said.
Silva, 10, exudes a confidence that belies her age.
"I want to be the best tennis player in the world,"
asserted the 4-foot-4, 65-pound grade six student at
Linden Meadows School.
Silva, who recently made the Under 12 national team,
is part of a Tennis Canada program designed to identify
top young players across the country, noted Rick Bochinksi,
executive director of Tennis Manitoba.
"Tennis Canada conducts camps across the country, and
they're focusing on U 12 players because they want to
develop them at a young age," he said.
"They did these camps between May and August and sent
their top coaches across the country to identify players,"
Bochinksi said, adding that a couple of national coaches
were here in June.
Eight boys and eight girls from across Canada were chosen
to attend a camp at the National Tennis Centre at York
University in Toronto Oct. 5-9 and Silva was the only
Manitoban selected.
"She's the best female U 12 player in the province.
She's feisty and intense, and she loves the game," said
Bochinski, adding that Silva also will participate in
a similar four-day camp in Montreal, Jan. 25-29.
Silva first swung a tennis racquet at age three.
"My dad was playing with his friends, and it looked
like fun. So, then my mom got me started," said Silva,
who finished in the top 12 at the indoor female U 12
nationals in April and in the top 16 at the outdoor
U 12 championships this summer -- as the youngest player
at both events.
She acknowledged the benefits of attending the Tennis
Canada camp in Toronto.
"Being with the top juniors in Canada and seeing how
they play and practice, I learned something," said Silva,
adding that the athletes spent four to five hours a
day on the court and also worked out off the court.
She also plays golf in the summer with her father --
a native of South Africa who plays professional golf
in Europe.
"I like tennis best. Golf is a little slow. I like faster
sports," said Silva, who was born in Canada and lived
for several years with her parents in Portugal.
