Winnipeg, MB (TM) – The
Winnipeg Lawn Tennis
Club threw a party this past weekend in celebration
of its 125th anniversary. It was fitting that 125 people,
including current and past members, took part in the
festivities. The weather, the food and the music were
enjoyed by everyone in attendance.
A raffle was held to raise some extra funds for activities
at the club. Congratulations to Lorraine Hydamaka who
won the Wilson racquet autographed by Roger Federer
and to Karl Schoenherr who took home the 2007 Rogers
Cup ticket package, which includes tickets to the semi-finals,
valet parking and access to the VIP lounge.

Winnipeg, MB (TM) – The final point
standings for the past year have been determined in
the Open, 4.5 and 3.5 events. The leaders in each of
the singles categories will receive special recognition
at 2006 Tennis Manitoba
Awards Banquet presented by CIBC Wood Gundy on Thursday,
October 5th at the Canad Inns Polo Park.
Doug DeVriendt of the Glendale Golf & Country
Club and Anita Paskvalin of the Winnipeg Winter
Club have captured the Men’s and Women’s Open titles,
respectively. DeVriendt had another banner year, winning
6 of a possible 7 tournaments. He never lost a single
set to a player from Manitoba, with his lone tournament
defeat coming at the hands of Alex Gravina of Toronto,
who beat Doug at the Manitoba Open for the second consecutive
year.
Paskvalin accumulated the most points in the Women’s
Open Singles category on the strength of her tournament
victory at the Tuxedo Open and runner-up finishes at
the Winnipeg Indoor Championships at the Winter Club,
the Clay Court Championships at Taylor Tennis and the
Manitoba Indoor Championships at Taylor.
Aaron Margolis won the Clay Court Championship
and was a finalist at both the Winnipeg Indoor and Manitoba
Indoor Championships. These results propelled him to
the points title in the Men’s 4.5 Singles category.
The Women’s 4.5 Singles title goes to Evann Waschuk
of the Tuxedo Tennis Club. Waschuk earned 2 titles over
the past 12 months, winning the Deer Lodge Classic and
the Manitoba Indoor Championship.
Helder Serpa cruised to the Men’s 3.5 Singles
title, winning the Deer Lodge Classic, the Tuxedo Open
and the Manitoba Indoor Championship. The Men’s 40+
Singles crown was captured by Don Bushuk, who
won the Clay Court Championship and the Prairie Regional
Senior Open.
The points leaders were determined by tallying the points
earned at sanctioned tournaments held over the past
12 months. The results from the following tournaments
were used to determine the winners:
2005 Winnipeg Indoor Open
2006 Wheat City Open
2006 Clay Court Championships
2006 Deer Lodge Classic
2006 Arby’s Manitoba Open
2006 Tuxedo Open
2006 Manitoba Indoor Championships
Come celebrate the accomplishments of these fine players,
as they are recognized on October 5th at the
2006 Tennis Manitoba
Awards Banquet presented by CIBC Wood Gundy. Individual
tickets are available from the Tennis Manitoba office
for $40 or tables of 10 for $350.
