Winnipeg, MB (TM) – It’s not often that
Doug DeVriendt enters a tournament in Manitoba coming
off a loss. After suffering a tough 3-set defeat in
the semi-finals of the Arby’s Manitoba Open to eventual
champion Alex Gravina of Toronto, DeVriendt bounced
back with another statement at the Tuxedo Open.
He waltzed through the draw without dropping a set and
overpowered Patrick Millican for the Men’s Singles title
with a 6-1, 6-1 victory. DeVriendt’s dominance of the
local tennis scene was very evident again. The only
blemishes on his record over the last two years are
losses to Gravina at the last two Manitoba Opens. He
has captured every other tournament that he has entered
in convincing style.
Other winners at Tuxedo were as follows:
Women’s Open Singles: Anita Paskvalin def. Evann
Waschuk 6-3, 6-0
Women’s Doubles: Paskvalin / McKenzie def. Clarissa
& Erica Chen 6-4, 7-5
Mixed Doubles: Zayac / Burrell def. Bishop /
Mercury 6-4, 7-5
Men’s 4.5 Singles: Dennis Cann def Ion Ursatanu
6-1, 5-7, 6-2
Men’s 3.5 Singles: Helder Serpa def. Jake Bergen
6-1, 6-1
Women’s 4.5 Singles: Clarissa Chen def. Darlene
Lee 6-2, 6-3
Men’s 4.5 Doubles: Whittaker / Lloyd def. Ursatanu
/ Trinidad 2-6, 6-4, 6-2
Men’s 40+ Singles: Tom Brown def. Terry Langan
6-2, 6-3

Winnipeg, MB (TM) – It’s every tennis
enthusiast’s dream to watch the best players in the
world on center court on the final weekend of a big
tournament. That dream is a reality for two lucky fans
who have won the top prize in the Rogers Cup Sweepstakes.
Gord Wimble’s name was selected from among the more
than 300 tickets sold by Tennis Manitoba and its member
clubs. He will be sending his wife Julia and mother-in-law,
Shirley Todorski, to Toronto for the semi-finals and
final of the 2006 Rogers Cup on August 12th and 13th.
The trip includes round-trip airfare, 2 nights at the
Hilton Suites Conference Center & Spa and great seats
for the last 3 matches of the tournament featuring the
best male players in the world!
Tennis Manitoba and its member clubs were able to make
a profit of $1300 from the Rogers Cup Sweepstakes. This
money will be used to assist with the development of
club programs and grassroots initiatives in Manitoba.
Thank you to everyone who helped contribute to the growth
of tennis in the province and congratulations to our
winners!
