McNicol and DeVriendt on Cruise Control at Deer Lodge

    Winnipeg, MB (TM) – Kyla McNicol returned to local tennis action at the Deer Lodge Classic after recently completing her sophomore season at the University of Central Florida. She waltzed through the draw dropping only a couple of games on her way to the Women’s Singles title, capping the week with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Kate McKenzie in the final.

Doug DeVriendt continued his mastery on the men’s side, dropping only a handful of games en route to the Men’s Singles Championship. He closed the week with a convincing 6-0, 6-1 over Patrick Millican in the final. Doug also captured the Men’s Doubles title, teaming up with Evan Mancer to defeat Sean LaCap and Geoff Kirbyson 6-1, 6-2 in the final.

Other winners included Evann Waschuk in the Women’s 4.5 Singles, Marc Lloyd in the Men’s 4.5 Singles, Helder Serpa in the Men’s 3.5 Singles, Jason Whittaker and Mark Brooks in the Men’s 4.5 Doubles, Kate McKenzie and Anita Paskvalin in the Women’s Open Doubles, Kate McKenzie and Geoff Kirbyson in the Mixed Open Doubles and Darlene Lee and Alix Jean-Paul in the Mixed 4.5 Doubles.

Miller Wins Twice on Clay

    Winnipeg, MB (TM) – Alana Miller made a successful return to tennis after concentrating on squash over the winter months. She captured the Women’s Open Singles title and then teamed up with Geoff Kirbyson to win the Mixed Doubles event at the Manitoba Clay Court Championships at Taylor Tennis.

Miller defeated Anita Paskvalin 6-1, 6-4 in the Women’s Singles Championship and then earned the Mixed Doubles crown with Kirbyson, getting the better of Ainsley Bishop and Hart Pollack 6-4, 6-2 in the final.

Mario Trstenjak, in his first year at the helm of Taylor Tennis, was very excited to see the Manitoba Clay Court Championships return to the summer schedule after a 7 year absence. The players and spectators thoroughly enjoyed the tournament and look forward to seeing it on the schedule again in 2007.

The Early Bird prize winner in the Rogers Cup raffle was Anabela Silva. She took home a Wilson racquet bag and will be hoping her luck continues when the grand prize, a trip for 2 to the Rogers Cup in Toronto, is given away at the Arby’s Manitoba Open on July 16th at the Kildonan Tennis Club.

Lee Carter Earns Tennis Canada Excellence Award

    Winnipeg, MB (TM) – Lee Carter, Manitoba’s top wheelchair tennis player, has received the Tennis Canada Excellence Award for most improved wheelchair tennis athlete. Carter had a very successful 2005, surging up the ITF world rankings from no. 277 to no. 59 by the end of the year in singles. He also finished the year ranked no. 96 in the world in doubles.

The Tennis Canada Excellence Awards will be presented at the Rogers Cup tennis events held in Montreal and Toronto this summer. These awards serve as an annual recognition of the country’s tennis talent. The 2005 awards acknowledge the efforts and accomplishments of high performance athletes, seniors, officials, coaches, the Tennis Professionals Association (TPA) and Building Tennis Communities (BTCs) who best represented Canada on the tennis scene.

Congratulations to Lee for this outstanding accomplishment!!

Junior Qualifier Added to Schedulee

 

The Deer Lodge Junior Girls Classic for U14 & U18 girls singles and doubles events takes place June 24-27, 2006 at the Deer Lodge Tennis Club.

    Winnipeg, MB (TM) – The Deer Lodge Tennis Club and the Glendale Golf & Country Club have stepped forward to host the next Prairie Regional qualifier.

Deer Lodge will play host to the Girls U14 and U18 singles and doubles events, while Glendale will be the site of the Boys U14 and U18 singles and doubles categories.

Top Gun in Golden Valley

    Winnipeg, MB (TM) – Kevin Kylar’s win streak now stands at 12 matches in the Boys U12 category since April 1st. After winning his last two matches at the U12 Indoor Junior Nationals, Kevin has won the last three U12 tournaments he has entered, including the Big Sand tournament at Taylor Tennis, the VW Auto Haus tournament at Glendale and the Golden Valley tournament in Minneapolis.

The win in Minneapolis was highlighted by a three hour battle in the semi-finals. The event was rated Championship level 6 and gives players points toward US rankings. Kevin continues to be the number 1 ranked player in Manitoba in the Boys U12 category.

Tuxedo Winners Draw Closer to Prairie Regional Berths

    Winnipeg, MB (TM) – Manitoba’s top junior players battled last week for valuable points in the race for positions at the 2006 Outdoor Junior Nationals qualifier. The Tuxedo Tennis Club played host to the qualifier, with competition taking place under sunny skies all week.

Double winners included Daniella Silva, Evann Waschuk, Brendan Corrigan and Sean Bailey. Daniella captured the U12 Girls Singles title with a close 7-6, 7-6 win over Maya Kirstein and then teamed up with Alexia Cholakis to defeat Kylie Waschuk and Emily Fridrik 6-0, 6-1 to earn the U14 Girls Doubles Championship. Evann Waschuk did not drop a set in capturing the U14 Girls Singles Championship, capping the tournament with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Daniella Silva. Evann then partnered with Erika Fridrik to win the U18 Girls Doubles event, beating Clarissa Chen and Jessica Silva 6-1, 7-6(5).

Sean Bailey and Brendan Corrigan topped off a successful week by winning the U18 Boys Doubles crown with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Eric Pollard and Jeremy Trinidad. Sean also won the U16 Boys Singles Championship, defeating Eric Pollard 6-2, 6-3 and Brendan narrowly defeated Muzeen Ismath, winning the U14 Boys Singles Championship with a 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 result in the final.

The other winner at the Tuxedo Junior Open was Robert Kennedy, who won the first Early Bird prize (a Wilson backpack) as part of Tennis Manitoba’s Rogers Cup Raffle. Robert, along with all of the other raffle ticket buyers this summer, will be hoping to win the grand prize, which is a trip for 2 to Toronto to see the top male players in the world at the Rogers Cup. The grand prize draw will take place at the Manitoba Open on Sunday, July 16th at the Kildonan Tennis Club.


Final results at the Tuxedo Junior Open were as follows:

U10 Boys/Girls Singles: Katie Trstenjak won the round-robin

U12 Girls Singles: Daniella Silva def. Maya Kirstein 7-6, 7-6

U14 Girls Singles: Evann Waschuk def. Daniella Silva 6-2, 6-1

U16 Girls Singles: Clarissa Chen def. Catherine Moses 6-3, 6-1

U18 Girls Singles: Anita Paskvalin def. Clarissa Chen 6-2, 6-1

U12 Boys Singles: J.J. Gerstein def. Scott Neuendorff 6-1, 6-0

U14 Boys Singles: Brendan Corrigan def. Muzeen Ismath 6-1, 4-6, 7-5

U16 Boys Singles Sean Bailey def. Eric Pollard 6-2, 6-3

U18 Boys Singles Michael Black def. Sean Bailey 6-2, 6-4
