for ace – Backhand key in pair of titles

Winnipeg, MB (Winnipeg
Sun) – Opponents beware -- Alex Lesiuk has a new
weapon in his arsenal and the 15-year-old tennis ace
is not afraid to use it.
Lesiuk showed off his new one-handed backhand at this
weekend's Big Sand Junior Classic at the Taylor Tennis
Club. Yesterday, Lesiuk dumped Jeremy Trinidad 6-1,
6-0 to capture the under-18 boys' singles crown and
beat Eric Pollard 6-0, 6-1 to win the under-16 boys'
title.
"I just switched to a one-handed backhand so that was
a little tough to get used to," said Lesiuk, a Grade
10 student in the sports program at Vincent Massey Collegiate.
"This tournament it looks like it's improving quite
a bit. I was kind of unconfident about it, but I'm more
confident now. It's getting better."
Needless to say, Lesiuk plans to stick with the one-handed
backhand.
"(The other hand is) solely for tossing (the ball for
serves) now," said Lesiuk.
Added to his powerful forehand and serve, his improved
backhand gives him a formidable combination.
"He's a really good player and he's hitting his big
forehand," said Pollard, a 14-year-old Grade 9 student
at Charleswood Junior High who plays out of the Taylor
Tennis Club.
"His forehand and his serve keep getting better every
time I play him. (His forehand is) just a big weapon."
The Big Sand Junior Classic is the first of four Tennis
Manitoba qualifying tournaments for the outdoor junior
nationals in August. The top four boys and four girls
in each age group in the point standings will represent
Manitoba at the prairie regional qualifier, July 10-13
in Winnipeg. The top four finishers in each event at
the prairie regional earn berths to the various outdoor
junior nationals.
Lesiuk hasn't had much success at the junior nationals
over the years. But this year, he's committed himself
to an intensive training regimen which has him at the
Winnipeg Winter Club every day after school with two
hours on the court and an hour of fitness training.
"I've won a couple of matches here and there (at junior
nationals)," said Lesiuk. "Last time, I just won one
doubles match against Alberta. But I'm playing quite
a bit better than I have in past years. My goal is to
make it to the quarters, top eight. But I need to train
quite a bit for that."
The extra work seems to be paying off especially on
a day when he plays in three finals.
"It's all about fitness," said Lesiuk, who also teamed
up with Erica Chen to play in the boys' doubles final.
"After a few matches a day, it all comes down to that.
It's as much (about) fitness as tennis."
In other results, Muzeen Ismath upset Will McPherson
6-3, 6-4 to win the under-14 boys' title while Kevin
Kylar downed J.J. Gerstein 6-0, 6-1 in the under-12
boys' final.
On the girls' side, Jamie Peterson was also a double
winner. Peterson beat Catherine Moses 6-2, 6-0 to take
the under-16 girls' singles title and upset top-seed
Erica Chen 6-3, 6-1 in the under-18 girls' final.
Jessica Silva held off Jade Kirstein 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 to
win the under-14 girls' final while Maya Kirstein upset
top-seed Danielle Silva 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 to win the under-12
girls' final.
Next up on the Tennis Manitoba schedule is the Auto
Haus VW Junior Classic, May 11-14 and May 25-28 at the
Glendale Golf and Country Club.

– Bill Serbin is busy putting all of the plans in place
for the 2006 Tennis Futures clinics. This very successful
event provides an opportunity for elementary students

sport of tennis. This year Tennis Futures has been expanded
to include a fifth day, with 150 children participating
at each clinic. The scheduled dates of the clinics at
the Winnipeg Lawn
Tennis Club are May 15th, 16th, 17th & 18th. The
fifth clinic will be held at the
