My Trip to Copper Bowl

Kevin Kylar (above) in front of Copper Bowl sponsor vehicle.

    Mon Feb 13'06
Winnipeg, MB (Submitted by Kevin Kylar) – Now when I am back in Winnipeg I am not sure whether it was more stressful to prepare for a Copper Bowl or to play in a Copper Bowl.

Copper Bowl 2006 was a USTA National Level 3 tournament scheduled for January 1-7 in Tucson, Arizona. Close to 1600 players were entered in various age divisions. I entered Boys 12 event. The entry deadline was 30 days prior to the event (something to get used to if one wants to play international tournaments).

There were 117 entries for a 96 draw. My name was on the waiting list or what later became the qualifying list. Everyday I would check the website to see changes in my standings. Three days prior to the event I was the second seed in qualifying. My dream was to qualify and win at least one match in the main draw. When we arrived in Tucson, we checked the registration and my name was out of qualifying. A bit of luck and a break, a couple of players had withdrawn and I was moved to the main draw. First dream accomplished. Being in the main draw also gave me two extra days to practice and get used to the sunny outdoors. In addition to the practice time with my coach, I participated in a 2-hour tennis camp with Luke Jensen, former French Open Doubles Champion.

My first tournament match in 2006 was against Erik Marbach from the Chicago area. I lost 6-0, 6-1. I thought I played good, but my coach told me that I played a non-aggressive, nervous match. I dropped to the feed-in consolation and faced Scott Sherwood from the Cleveland area in my next match. Playing on the beautiful courts at the University of Arizona helped me overcome my nervousness and win 6-2, 6-2. I was very happy. Later on the same day I lost to Buddy Givens from Florida 6-0, 6-2. I played well, but he was a more complete player.

My dreams came true later that day when I learned that my one match win will place me on the USTA National ranking list. I am not sure where, but probably around #900. I only learned how big a deal it is at a player’s party. With all of the regional events and sectional events, National rankings mean something.

The last 2 days of the event I attended a seminar by a Sports Psychologist, Dr. Jorge Valverde, called Complete Tennis: Mental Toughness. It was an excellent seminar, as so much of what he said can be applied to everyday life. I also did a lot of watching and analyzing the top players. Joseph Digivlio from Newport Beach won the Copper Bowl. I watched 2 of his matches. Joseph made 6 unforced errors and his dad went crazy. His dad told me that tennis is a game of no mistakes. If you want to be a champion you should not make any errors. It is hard to imagine until you see it. Joseph is an ordinary 11 year old kid, but what a player.

The trip and all the stuff from it is now settling in. I have got one year before I go back to the Copper Bowl. I have a dream which I want to keep to myself. I cannot wait to be back in Tucson.
