Kildonan Tennis Club Chosen to Host 2006 Manitoba Open

 Kildonan Tennis Club

    Wed Dec 14'05
Winnipeg, MB (TM) – Tennis Manitoba has selected the Kildonan Tennis Club as the host of the 2006 Arby’s Manitoba Open Tennis Championships. After a very successful 2005 Manitoba Open, which attracted 100 players to the Kildonan Tennis Club and included $10,000 in prize money, Tennis Manitoba is looking to enhance its showcase tournament in 2006.

Kildonan’s volunteers, staff, clubhouse and brand new courts make it a very attractive location for the province’s showcase tennis tournament, which will be held July 7-16. With Arby’s on board as the new title sponsor and prize money increasing to $12,500, it promises to be an exciting event.

Arby’s, Tennis Manitoba and the Kildonan Tennis Club are looking forward to working together in an effort to make next summer’s tournament the most successful Manitoba Open ever.

Grant Tymchuk of Arby’s presents the 2005 Global Manitoba Open Men's Singles tournament trophy to Alessandro Gravina.

    Tue Dec 13'05
Winnipeg, MB (TM) – Tennis Manitoba is very pleased to announce that Arby’s is the new Title Sponsor of the Manitoba Open. Arby’s made a very significant contribution toward the success of the 2005 Manitoba Open and have increased their commitment substantially for 2006, allowing tournament organizers to increase the prize money to $12,500, the largest sum in the 101 year history of the tournament. Grant Tymchuk, Arby’s Franchisee, is to be commended for his desire to contribute to the growth of the tournament and to the sport in general.

“We are thrilled with the partnership that has been developed with Arby’s over the last couple of years. Grant has demonstrated tremendous support for the Rossbrook House program, the Tennis Futures clinics and now the Manitoba Open”, exclaimed Rick Bochinski, Executive Director of Tennis Manitoba. “We are in a position to attract a very strong field to the Manitoba Open next summer and this tournament will help showcase our sport in the province. This is due in large part to the Arby’s sponsorship.”

The 2005 Men’s Singles Champion, Alessandro Gravina of Toronto, and 2005 Women’s Singles Champion, Kyla McNicol of Winnipeg, have both indicated that they plan to defend their titles next July. That will not be an easy task in 2006, as the substantial increase in prize money is likely to bring more top players from across Canada to Winnipeg next summer.

The dates of the Arby’s Manitoba Open are July 9-16, 2006.

Tennis Canada to Include U12 Nationals in 2006 Schedule

2005 U12 Team at Gray Rocks

2005 U12 Team at Gray Rocks, Quebec

    Fri Dec 9'05
Winnipeg, MB (TM) – After a lengthy hiatus, the U12 Junior Nationals will once again be sanctioned by Tennis Canada in 2006. A considerable amount of pressure was put on Tennis Canada by the Provincial Tennis Associations to bring back the U12 Junior Nationals to the sanctioned tournament schedule.

In 2004, Tennis Ontario took it upon themselves to organize an unofficial U12 Outdoor Junior Nationals in St. Catharines and this past summer Tennis Quebec took the initiative and hosted a non-sanctioned U12 Outdoor Junior Nationals in Gray Rocks. With the momentum generated from these two very successful events in Eastern Canada, and the addition of a major sponsor, the U12 Junior Nationals will be a reality in 2006.

The dates are as follows:
  • April 1-8: U12 Indoor Junior Nationals
    Toronto, Ontario

  • August 11-18: U12 Outdoor Junior Nationals
    Gray Rocks, Quebec

As a reminder, the top 4 boys and top 4 girls in the U12 (born in 1994 or later) point standings will qualify to represent Manitoba at the Prairie Regionals to be held February 24-26, 2006 in Saskatoon. These players will compete against the top 4 boys and 4 girls from Saskatchewan for the right to represent the Prairie Region at the 2006 Indoor Junior Nationals. Results from the following tournaments will be used to determine the final point standings:

  • Wheat City Junior Open
    August 20-21, 2005

  • World of Water Junior Open
    August 25-28, 2005

  • Auto Haus Volkswagen Fall Classic
    September 16-26, 2005

  • Winnipeg Winter Club Junior Open
    January 30 – February 5, 2006

* Each player will count their best 3 results from the 4 tournaments to determine their final point total.

For further information about the U12 Junior Nationals or the process to qualify to represent Manitoba at these events, contact Rick at Tennis Manitoba.

Winnipeg Winter Club now a Tennis Canada Tennis Development Centre

Jared Connell (above) is the Head Pro at the Winnipeg Winter Club and Tennis Manitoba’s Provincial Coach. Chris Yard and Peter Otto (below) help out at the Winter Club Tennis Academy.

    Wed Dec 7'05
Winnipeg, MB (TM) – The Winnipeg Winter Club has been named a "High Performance Tennis Development Centre” by Tennis Canada. This prestigious designation recognizes and ranks The Winter Club’s junior tennis programs as among the best in Canada. It is the first time a Manitoba tennis club has qualified for the high performance certification.

“This is definitely an honour for our Club,” said Jared Connell, Head Tennis Professional at The Winter Club. “There are currently thirty four Tennis Development Centres across the country that have qualified based on the commitment that each club is making to bringing new players into the game as well as developing competitive young tennis players across Canada and more of them.”

The Winter Club has three indoor courts and four outdoor summer season courts and a staff of Tennis Professionals who offer private lessons, conduct group clinics for all ages and organize league and tournament play. The club also offers tennis players access to professional fitness trainers and a well equipped gym and swimming pool for cross training. More than four hundred Club members use the tennis and ancillary facilities year-round.

As a result of the Tennis Development Centre designation, The Winter Club receives some financial support from Tennis Canada and guidance in establishing and maintaining state-of-the-sport tennis training and court fitness programs. More important, according to Connell, is the benefit of receiving several visits a year from Tennis Canada’s distinguished international level coaches.

“Tennis Canada’s coaches are recognized at the highest level of the professional game,” Connell said. “Having them on court with our elite program kids to run a camp, conduct training sessions and monitor the progress of our top players is tremendously important. It exposes players in Manitoba to the same level of coaching as the very best junior and professional players in the country and its proving to be a great motivational tool for our team.”

While every Tennis Development Centre has a distinct high performance component, many of the criteria that the Winter Club had to meet were based on the grassroots and entry level camps and programs and competitive play at the recreational level that the Club offers for junior players. Tennis Canada ranks community and recreational tennis facilities as the first link along the path to success at the highest international levels like The Davis Cup and The Olympics – and higher rankings for more of Canada’s professional tennis players.

Jared Connell has a high profile in Manitoba tennis. In addition to his position as Head Pro at the Winnipeg Winter Club, he is Tennis Manitoba’s Provincial Coach charged with training the best Under 18 players in the province for Western Canada Games, Canada Games and National Championship play. He has also recently opened his own Tennis Academy at the Winter Club.

“The Tennis Academy is structured to allow serious recreational players to develop into elite players if they have the desire and the determination to compete. Our staff of coaches and instructors is always pleased to evaluate the potential of any young player who contacts us,” he said.

Tennis Participation Is On the Rise

    Tue Dec 6'05
Winnipeg, MB (TM) – Increases in racquet and tennis ball sales, higher attendance at professional tournaments and improved television ratings are all positive signs for the sport of tennis. Put those factors together with an increase in participation and player retention and the news is very positive for the game.

These findings were part of an annual participation research study conducted in the United States.

Congratulations to the new 2006 Tuxedo Tennis Club Executive

    Sat Dec 3'05
Winnipeg, MB (TM) – The recent Tuxedo Tennis Club’s Annual General Meeting was very well attended and was successful in filling every position on the executive. Their new executive consists of Brian Wilding (President), Tom Neufeld (Vice-President), Lana Abbott (Secretary), John Yarema (Treasurer), Brian Saiko (Membership/Marketing), Hugh Malcolmson (House & Grounds), Dan Rutherford, Selvi Varathappan and Melissa Steele (Members-at-Large), as well as Elaine Thompson (Past-President).

Many thanks to the outgoing executive members, who, with varying numbers of years of service to Tuxedo Tennis Club, include Phil Spevack, Jane Leschasin, Arun Ogale, John & Margaret Childs, Anne and Ash Ashraff, and Bruce Waschuk.

2005 was a very exciting year for TTC and we all look forward to seeing what this new executive has in store for 2006.

Club Priorities
A straw vote on the Club’s priorities for 2006 came up with the need for a new clubhouse. However, before the funding can be acquired, an agreement with the city must be worked out. Significant negotiations will need to take place very soon on the draft agreement received from the City on October 28th. According to Jan Taylor, the new clubhouse may be financed in part by a sizeable grant from the Sport Legacy Trust Fund, whose application deadline is January 15th. An Ad Hoc committee is working towards meeting that deadline. The next year should bring some interesting new developments to the club.

Reported by Elaine Thompson, Past President
