Sean Bailey in action
at the 2005 World of Water Junior Championships
held at his home club, the Kildonan Tennis Club.

Winnipeg, MB (Winnipeg
Free Press) – ACCORDING to people in the know, Sean
Bailey is destined for big things in the sport of tennis.
"Sean will more than likely be the top male player for
our 2007 Western Canada Games team in Edmonton. He'll
be looked upon to be a leader on that team," says Rick
Bochinski, executive director of Tennis Manitoba.
Bailey, 13, won the under-16 and under-18 boys singles
titles at the Manitoba Tennis Championships, which were
held Aug. 25-28. He and partner Brendan Corrigan, 13,
also captured gold in the under-18 boys doubles category.
It's a pretty remarkable accomplishment, considering
that Bailey first picked up a tennis racket just three
years ago.
"He's come a long way. He's progressed quickly. With
only three years of tennis that doesn't happen very
often," says Peter Otto, Bailey's coach at the Kildonan
Tennis Club.
"He's such a good student of the game. He's a perfectionist
who spends a lot of time (fine tuning his game)." He
adds that Bailey is so far ahead of the other boys in
his age group that there was no reason for him to compete
in the under-14 division of the provincial championships.
"There's no competition for him there," said Otto.
Bailey notes that he was seeded second going into the
under-18 competition.
"I won my first match against a player I had never played
against before," said the 5-foot-10, 125-pound Grade
9 student at Munroe Junior High School.
Then he won his second match in straight sets against
a 17-year-old.
"In the final, I won 12-10 in a tiebreaker against a
15-year-old player," says Bailey, adding that he defeated
the same person in the final of the under-16 category.
Otto says Bailey has an incredible level of intensity
on the court.
"He's very athletic. He's also one of the most polite
boys I've ever coached," he said, adding that Bailey
beats most of the adult male players at the Kildonan
club.
Bailey notes that he enjoys playing doubles more than
singles lately, ever since he teamed up with Corrigan.
"It's more fun. There's someone else on the court to
encourage you," he says.
When he was in primary school, Bailey used to hit a
tennis ball back and forth on the street with friends.
"And I always watched tennis on TV," says the former
elite-level soccer player, who also played the power
and libero positions on the Winman volleyball team that
won the under-14 national club volleyball championships
earlier this year in Saskatoon.
"One year, I went with my parents to Toronto to see
(former world champion) Pete Sampras play, and I said
that maybe I should start playing tennis," recalls Bailey.
Later, he attended the University of Manitoba Summer
Sports Camp where he played some tennis.
"The instructor there said I should take some lessons
because I had potential," says Bailey. This year, he
also qualified for the under-14 national tennis championships.
"But I didn't go because I'd rather go to tournaments
in the U.S." |

Winnipeg, MB (TM)
– After trying for years to get representation from
Winnipeg in the Crookston Pirate Booster Invitational
Tennis Tournament, George Kylar got his wish in 2005
as Winnipeg was invited to join seven other teams in
the high school girls competition. Kylar took on the
role of coach and traveled to Crookston, Minnesota with
9 girls to compete against teams from Crookston, East
Grand Forks, Perham, Thief River Falls, Moorhead, Bemidji
and Park Rapids. This tournament has been organized
for the past 25 years, with each of the 8 teams consisting
of 10 players plus spares. A total of 88 girls participated
in this year’s event, which required 17 courts to play
all of the matches. Each girl was guaranteed three matches
and it was a great opportunity for the girls from Winnipeg
to face some new competition.
The team from Winnipeg, who earned a 5th place finish,
included Evann Waschuk, Maya Kirstein, Jade Kirstein,
Catherine Moses, Katie Haber, Rachel Cosman, Daniella
Clement, Robin Zajac and Erica Sharfstein.
A special thank you to Marg Kirstein, who assisted
George Kylar with all aspects of the trip, including
the shuttling of players between two sites.

Winnipeg, MB (TM)
– Lac du Bonnet held its first ever tennis lessons geared
for kids ages 7 -12. Kelly Deveau and crew taught these
sessions in May & June of 2005 . Young kids hit hundreds
of balls using a series of activity stations. The group's
skill level improved so quickly that "live ball" play
was introduced far earlier than expected. Whether using
a practise hit or tennis trainer device, the kids enjoyed
the broken racquet throwing station the best! The
community and parents were extremely supportive of this
initiative. Tantalum Mining Corporation donated substantial
funds. This enabled us to purchase brand new racquets
for each kid at the awards ceremony. Not to be outdone,
the local Co-op station gave free slushies to all players
and coaches. Thanks to Claude Deveau and Brent Pemberton
for their enthusiasm and patience.
Saturday morning kids league is now running from
10am-noon. The cost is $30 per session or a $5 drop-in
fee.
Contact Kelly Deveau at 345-6751 for more details.
Future plans include free tennis sessions for teens
and a half-day week long tennis camp for next summer.
