Team 'Toba tamed

Regina, SK (Winnipeg
Free Press, Ashley Prest) – While a special tie-breaker
match yesterday morning gave Manitoba's tennis team
new life, a fifth-place finish eluded them later in
the day which would have been the best Canada Summer
Games showing since 1973.
As it stood, the tie-breaker required a mixed doubles
format which put Manitoba singles players Alexa Zayac
and Sean LaCap together for their first mixed doubles
pairing in over a year. The talented twosome defeated
New Brunswick's mixed doubles team, before a raucous
crowd of Manitoba supporters at Lakeshore Tennis Club.
"We practised together maybe once, just in case this
happened. It's not really something you can prepare
for but we were ready to win," said Zayac, who later
lost her singles match (6-3, 4-6, 10-6) against Nova
Scotia in the fifth/sixth place in team play. In the
six matches against Nova Scotia, Manitoba was defeated
5-1, which placed Manitoba sixth, the same position
as in 2001. "It was spectacular, we were playing a solid
tennis game, we had our team behind us and we were so
happy to make our team proud." …
In tennis, Manitoba, fourth in Pool B, had played New
Brunswick, third in Pool A, in the crossover playoff
format on Wednesday and the two teams ended up tied
3-3 after the six matches forcing the tie-breaker. Then
Manitoba and Nova Scotia played yesterday for fifth
and sixth placings overall. In the other women's singles
match, Anita Paskvalin was defeated (7-5), (6-2) while
the men's singles matches saw Manitoba's LaCap (6-2,
3-6, 10-6) and Alex Lesiuk (6-7, 6-3, 10-5) also lose
in their outings. In doubles, the men's team of Matthew
Younger and Matt Luczynski was victorious (6-4, 6-7,
10-6) while the women's team of Jaime Peterson and Erica
Chen lost (6-2, 6-1).
Manitoba's tennis coach Jared Connell said having to
play in the tie-breaker scenario isn't a common occurrence
at the Games and required a determined effort from the
Manitoba athletes. "Mental toughness is a big factor
and that was the difference for our players on the court
this morning," Connell said. "That's why we've seen
so many good matches from our players overall as well."
LaCap said being involved in the tie-breaker was exciting
and challenging for he and Zayac.
"I had previously lost to the male player and I was
really excited and ready to get my revenge," LaCap said.
"Alexa was very confident as well and we just went out
there and had fun. The atmosphere was so awesome with
all our supporters around us. It was a great experience."
