    Winnipeg, MB (TM) – Tennis Manitoba is busy preparing for the 100th anniversary of the Manitoba Open, which will be hosted by the Kildonan Tennis Club. Past winners of the Men’s and Women’s Singles Championships will be recognized in the tournament program during the event this summer. Several names on the Women’s Singles trophy are missing and Tennis Manitoba is looking for those names so that all past winners are included in the program.

If you know who won the Women’s Singles Championship at the Manitoba Open during the following years, please contact the Tennis Manitoba office at 925-5660:

Alex Lesiuk Selected for Sport School Program

    Winnipeg, MB (TM) – Alex Lesiuk, one of Manitoba’s top U16 tennis players and a member of the Winnipeg Winter Club, was one of 20 grade nine students chosen for the Sport School Program at Vincent Massey Collegiate for the 2005/06 school year.

The Sport School Program is entering its fourth year of operation and was established to enable high performance student – athletes to pursue their sport goals, without forfeiting their academic development. Students in the program have access to top-rate teachers, a teacher advisor and a flexible school schedule that allows them to continue to train and compete.

Alex represented Manitoba at the 2004 Indoor and Outdoor Junior Nationals. He is a member of Tennis Manitoba’s Provincial Team and is currently on the 2005 Canada Summer Games training team.

Sean LaCap Wins Silver at U18 National Championship

    Winnipeg, MB (TM) – Less than a week after winning the U16 Doubles National Championship, Sean LaCap took home the Silver Medal at the U18 Doubles Nationals, narrowly losing a three set battle in the final. LaCap and his partner, Keziel Juneau of Repentigny, Quebec, knocked off the #1 seeds in Thursday’s semi-finals before bowing out 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 to the Quebec duo of Konrad Gasiorek and Sebastien Jacques on Friday in Toronto.

LaCap will stay in Toronto for another week, as he is entered in an ITF Junior Tournament, featuring some of the top junior players in North America..

Jade Kirstein Selected by Sport Manitoba for Women to Watch Grant

    Winnipeg, MB (SM) – Jade Kirstein is a recent recipient of the Women to Watch Grant Program. Working in partnership with Provincial Sport Organizations and Coaching Manitoba, Sport Manitoba (www.sportmanitoba.ca) provides a monthly grant of $500 to a female athlete, team, official or volunteer to assist them in enhancing their women in sport career.

Jade is a 12 year-old tennis player who has won provincial titles in both the 12 and under and 14 under age categories. At the 12 and under nationals last year Jade won the title of “Outstanding Sportsmanship” award for the females. This year finds her improving her skills as she earned a spot on the provincial team and the tour team that allows her the opportunity to play with older more experienced players.

As well as excelling in tennis at such a young age Jade is also very involved in her writing workshops, being on the honor roll at school and playing the clarinet. Jade will use her money to play in the out of province tournaments and Nationals.

Sean LaCap Wins U16 National Championship

    Winnipeg, MB (TM) – Sean LaCap became the first Manitoba tennis player in more than 30 years to capture a National Junior Championship, winning the U16 Doubles title this past weekend with his partner Philip Anderson from Nova Scotia. The duo entered the U16 Junior Nationals in Montreal as the # 2 seeds and knocked off the top seeded pair of Julien Gauthier of Quebec and Phil Nemec of Alberta in the final with a tight 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-4 victory. Sean demonstrated great resiliency in bouncing back from a disappointing showing in singles, where he was defeated in the round of 16, despite being the # 3 seed.

Sean now moves on to Markham, Ontario where he will be competing in both singles and doubles at the U18 Junior Nationals, April 18-23.

Outdoor Junior Nationals Qualifying

    Winnipeg, MB (TM) – Tennis Manitoba and Tennis Saskatchewan have again agreed to pool the spots for the 2005 Outdoor Junior Nationals, meaning the top 4 boys and top 4 girls in each age group in the Prairie Region will qualify for Nationals.

Each player will count the best two results from the three tournaments listed below and the top 4 players in the point standings will qualify for Nationals. All three tournaments will include feed-in consolations in all singles events and players will be allowed to enter a maximum of two events in each tournament.

The dates for the qualifying tournaments are as follows:

  May 11-15, 2005   Tuxedo Junior Open

Please note that Tennis Ontario has indicated that they will be hosting the U12 Outdoor Junior Nationals again in 2005, but a host site has not yet been located.
