Community Tennis
Building
Tennis Communities
The
Building Tennis Communities strategy focuses on encouraging
tennis participation within the whole community. The
goal is to bring more people into the game of tennis
and to keep them playing for life.
The
three key components of the Strategy are Community
Champions, Community Partners and the
Tennis Pathway. A Community Champion is an individual
who is passionate about tennis and is well connected
to other community leaders. The Community Champion brings
together partners in the community in an effort to grow
the game of tennis to improve the health of the community.
Community
Partners include community leaders who clearly understand
the role that tennis can play in the reduction or elimination
of some community problems. These partners may include
the education system, health department, parks and recreation
departments, media, local businesses and community tennis
clubs.
The
Tennis Pathway consists of four components on a continuum:
Try, Learn, Play and Compete. Community Champions focus
most of their energy on the Try and Learn stages, which
is where most people first experience tennis and decide
if they like it or not.
Tennis
Manitoba provides funding through Tennis Canada for
a three-year period and, after that, we work together
to find the resources to make sure that tennis continues
to contribute to the health of the community.
Brandon, Portage la Prairie and Selkirk have
completed three years in the Building Tennis
Communities program. Steinbach is entering its
second year in 2008 and Sargent Park is a first year
community. If your community would like more
information about the Building Tennis Communities
program contact the Tennis Manitoba office at (204)
925-5660.
