Raising a Racquet for Kids Bursary Program

    Mon Mar 16'09

Winnipeg, MB (TM) – Tennis Manitoba has created a new bursary program with funds raised from the recent Raising a Racquet for Kids event. A total of $1500 has been earmarked for a maximum of two bursaries. To view that application for the bursary click here.

The fundraiser, which was held last November at the Winnipeg Winter Club, was successful in generating $25,000 for junior tennis development in Manitoba. The goal of the bursary program is to support one or two high performance junior players who are faced with significant travel and competition expenses in their pursuit of success.

Many groups and programs will be receiving financial contributions as a result of the very successful Raising a Racquet for Kids event. Beneficiaries include the Sargent Park KidzFest, under 8 and under 12 Provincial Team programs, rural clubs and high performance junior players. Stay tuned for future funding success announcements.

Developing Tennis in Manitoba – How you can get involved

Tennis Futures Program

The Tennis Futures program introduces tennis to students in grades 4-6. Several schools in various divisions across Winnipeg participate in this annual event which is held in May. The main focus of these clinics is to promote healthy active living through a sport that is non-contact and offers equal opportunity to boys and girls.

Tennis Futures Program

    Sat Mar 7'09

Winnipeg, MB (TM) – Tennis Manitoba wants to get more people off the couch and on a court in an effort to improve fitness and promote a healthy lifestyle. The provincial association is looking to develop additional community programs and is looking for interested participants, supporting organizations and potentially a program coordinator to help make it all happen.

There is a serious need to get our children more active. Canada's Physical Activity Guidelines recommend children engage in 60 minutes of moderate activity and 30 minutes of vigorous physical activity every day. With busy parents and less recreational activity in schools the obesity and chronic diseases among children will continue to rise in Manitoba. Tennis Manitoba wants to help make physical activity a priority and is reaching out to schools and community centers in an effort to set up programs that make it easy for kids to get a start and stay involved in tennis for life.

Tennis is one of the few traditional sports in North America to grow in the past 5 years, with the biggest gains occurring with school aged youth. Schools, community centers and other organizations interested in introducing tennis to their groups are encouraged to contact Tennis Manitoba to discuss the programs that are right for them. Tennis Manitoba is also looking for financial support from those that wish to help promote a healthier lifestyle in our communities.

There is even a potential employment opportunity with the association for the right individual interested in helping to develop community programs, building partnerships, assisting with tournament management and promoting Tennis Manitoba’s programs. Please contact Tennis Manitoba for more details.
