TM Tweets with Twitter

    Sat Feb 28'09

Winnipeg, MB (TM) – For those who need access to local tennis news as it happens can now do so in the form of ‘tweets’ provided by a real-time short messaging service from Twitter. Tennis Manitoba is now using Twitter to help you keep in touch with fast breaking news without the need to keep checking for updates on the Tennis Manitoba website. You can choose how you wish to receive updates at http://twitter.com/tennismanitoba

Tennis Manitoba is joining other tennis industry groups that provide micro-news updates to subscribed ‘followers’, such as Tennis Australia, Tennis Channel, BBC, All England Lawn Tennis Club / Wimbledon, USTA, Prince, Wilson, and a variety of retailers, college teams and news bloggers. Becoming a Twitter ‘follower’ is fairly easy and best of all – free.

About Twitter (from Wikipedia)
Twitter is a social networking and micro-blogging service that allows its users to send and read other users' updates (known as tweets), which are text-based posts of up to 140 characters in length. Updates are displayed on the user's profile page and delivered to other users who have signed up to receive them. Senders can restrict delivery to those in their circle of friends (delivery to everyone being the default). Users can receive updates via the Twitter website, SMS, RSS, or through applications such as TwitterMobile, Tweetie, Twinkle, Twitterrific, Feedalizr, Facebook, and Twidget, a widget application.

$500M Budget for Building in Sport and Recreation

    Sat Feb 28'09
Winnipeg, MB (courtesy of Ontario Tennis Association) – The 2009 Federal Budget takes direct aim at the long standing infrastructure deficit in sport and recreation with a new, dedicated $500 million fund, to be expended in the next 2 years, to renew and build facilities in our communities. With specific references to the 1967 Centennial year building boom, the budget highlights in detail the need for “hockey arenas, soccer fields, tennis and basketball courts, and swimming pools” as examples for upgrading, renewal and building through this nationally delivered initiative.

The program will be a 50/50 matching initiative through regional development agencies whereby provinces and municipalities, community sport organizations, and the private sector may all apply for matching funds where shovel ready projects exist. Three big goals drive the new fund – economic stimulus, quality facilities, and national spirit – and the allocation will be based on merit and readiness accordingly.
