Two times a champion – McNicol wins women's singles, doubles crowns

Robert Steckley

Steckley, who was given a code violation warning for swearing at the end of the first set, won the Manitoba Open men's singles.

    Mon Jul 14'08

Winnipeg, MB (JIM BENDER, Winnipeg Sun) – First, she avenged last year's loss. Then, she doubled her crowns.

Winnipeg's Kyla McNicol defeated Carlene Leyden of Texas 6-0, 6-3 at the Kildonan Tennis Club yesterday to earn her fifth Manitoba Open women's singles title.

Then, she teamed up with fellow Winnipegger Alexa Zayac to beat Carlene and her sister, Jacinta, 6-3, 7-5 in the women's doubles final.

Carlene Leyden beat McNicol in last year's final.

"It was really exciting to get the title back," said McNicol, 21. "I really wanted it."

McNicol credited her coach and teammates at the University of Central Florida for her improvement.

"My teammates and coach really helped push me to the next level and I felt like it really showed out here," she said. "I had a lot of confidence ... My focus is my strength and my forehand is a huge weapon. This past year, I've really been stepping in and taking the ball early and it's just become easier and easier."

McNicol earned $1,700 for winning the singles and split $1,200 with Zayac for winning the doubles.

"But it's not about the money, it's about other things," said McNicol, who is taking TV/radio broadcasting in college. "It's about proving to myself and to my family and friends how good I have become. It's not about the prize, it's about the feelings you get when you win.

"It was a great day for everyone who's watched me since I was six years old to see how good I am now," said McNicol, who also won the Manitoba Open mixed doubles title Saturday.

On the men's side, Toronto's Robert Steckley upended Vancouver's Graeme Kassautzki 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the singles final.

"I tried to play aggressive the first set, which didn't work for me, so it was switch to Plan B," said Steckley, 28. "I had to sit back and play the ball and play the court, take the pace off and let him miss."

Steckley also put on a show for the near-capacity crowd with different antics, poses and interaction with some fans.

"If I didn't have that, you would have just seen fireworks," said Steckley, who was issued a code violation warning for swearing at the end of the first set. "When I'm in front of a crowd like this, it's more for them. It's not really for me."

Kassautzki, 21, denied that Steckley's showmanship, which started in the second set, bothered him.

"I play a lot of college tennis and there are a lot of crazy people out there so I just stick to my game," he said. "I try to focus and try to ignore it.

"I was trying to be creative and get to his backhand as much as I can. But I started to spray balls and I couldn't do anything right out there in the second and third sets. I was shanking balls and got down on myself."

Although he twisted an ankle slightly, Kassautzki said that did not affect him.

Steckley, who had eliminated local favourite Doug DeVriendt in a semifinal, won $3,000 while Kassautzki settled for $1,500.Kassautzki teamed with Minnesota's Tony Larsen to win the men's doubles.

Both the men's singles and double finals can be seen on Shaw TV today at 7 p.m.

Indoor match change causes uproar

Doug DeVriendt

Photo: MARC BENCE / SUN MEDIA FILES

DeVriendt said indoor play was catering to out-of-towners.

    Mon Jul 14'08

Winnipeg, MB (JIM BENDER, Winnipeg Sun) – Five-time champion Doug DeVriendt and other locals got "a major shaft" at the Manitoba Open tennis championship, charged his coach, George Kylar.

DeVriendt and his doubles partner, Evan Mancer, had their game on Saturday defaulted because they refused to play what was supposed to have been an outdoor game indoors.

Catering

Organizers had moved the event indoors from the Kildonan Tennis Club due to inclement weather.

"Doug DeVriendt was penalized because they were catering to the out-of-town players," Kylar suggested. "The rules clearly state that you should make every effort to play the tournament at the same venue."

DeVriendt and Mancer had offered to play the match early yesterday morning when the weather was supposed to clear.

"My partner and I weren't too happy because we felt it catered to the out-of-town players who had booked flights on Sunday afternoon or Sunday evening," DeVriendt said. "But they wouldn't budge and the reasons they gave us were nonsense."

Players often have to re-book flights under similar circumstances, Kylar said.

Neither DeVriendt nor his partner play indoors.

"Who wants to play in the indoor open?" Mancer asked. "They didn't move the Wimbledon final indoors because of rain. I know we're nowhere near that level but that's the standard."

Every effort

DeVriendt did finish his singles match indoors after starting it outdoors, and lost. But he questioned the move before resuming play.

Tennis Manitoba executive director Rick Bochinski said every effort was made to play the games outdoors but just wasn't possible. And the decision had nothing to do with players' flights, he insisted.

"The weather was so poor (Saturday) that we moved everything inside at Taylor Tennis," Bochinski said. "There were a couple of guys in doubles who said, 'We don't want to play inside, we'd rather play outside.' So, they refused to play (Saturday), thinking that we would be able to move that much to 8:30 (Sunday) morning.

"But with our schedule, there was no way we could do that. The courts were all booked and our matches all scheduled."

DeVriendt and Mancer were the only two who refused to play indoors.

"I'd be certainly disappointed if there would be a negative slant after we had such a positive tournament," Bochinski said.

Steckley the joker comes up aces in Manitoba Open final

Robert Steckley

Photo: Ruth Bonneville / Winnipeg Free Press

Robert Steckley drills a backhand return against Graeme Kassautzki en route to victory during the Manitoba Open men’s final Sunday afternoon.

    Mon Jul 14'08
Winnipeg, MB (Allan Besson, Winnipeg Free Press) – ROBERT STECKLEY was a court jester Sunday at the Kildonan Tennis Club during the men's singles final of the Arby's $15,000 Manitoba Open Championships.

The blond, pony-tailed and tattooed fourth seed from Toronto joked with ball boys, laughed off his miscues, and even gave his racquet to a fan sitting courtside, suggesting he could do better in the third set.

The fans ate it up, but when Steckley turned his attention to the game, the joker was dead serious. Steckley struggled in the first set against B.C.'s Graeme Kassautzki (No. 2) losing 6-2, but dominated the final two, 6-4 and 6-1. He had advanced to the final by defeating five-time champion Doug DeVriendt of Winnipeg 6-4, 6-1.

On the women's side, Kyla McNicol of Winnipeg (University of Central Florida) won the triple crown. First she defeated Carlene Leyden of Houston 6-0, 6-3 in the open singles, teamed up with Sean LaCap of Winnipeg to win the mixed doubles 6-2, 6-1 over Leyden and Geoff Kirbyson of Winnipeg, and then won the open doubles with Winnipeg teammate Alexa Zayac, beating Leyden and her sister Jacinta 6-3, 7-5.

The men's doubles was won by Kassautzki and Tony Larson of Minnesota with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Ontario's Hans Hach and Karol Szmurlo.

Steckley played aggressively in the first set. "I had to step back and play the ball, the court, smarter and just take some pace off of it," he said.

This was McNicol's fifth Manitoba Open singles title, and it couldn't have been sweeter. "My forehand was on fire. I was just ripping winners, but to tell you the truth, I just played a cleaner game. I played better off her game than she did off me."

Kassautzki said Steckley's antics had no effect on him. "I'm used to college tennis (University of New Mexico), and you meet a lot of crazy people out there, so I just tried to focus and play my game."

"This gets better every time you win," said McNicol. "I do whatever I can to get what I want, and I wanted that title back no matter what."

McNichol geared up to regain Open title

Kyla McNicol

Kyla McNichol is looking for her 5th women's singles title at the Manitoba Open Tennis Championship.

    Fri Jul 11'08
Winnipeg, MB (Chris Cariou, Winnipeg Free Press) –

WHAT a run for Kyla McNichol under the sun.

For four years running until last year, the Winnipeg tennis player and University of Central Florida scholarship student had won the women's singles title at the Manitoba Open Tennis Championship.

Her streak was broken last year by Carlene Leyden of Houston, a Calgarian by birth with plenty of relatives living in Winnipeg. McNichol, however, says she's ready to win again at the 2008 Arby's Manitoba Open.

"I had a really good run for four years, I did really well, and I fought really hard to win every year," said McNichol, who crushed Leydon in the 2006 final but lost a close three-set match to her in 2007.

"Hopefully this year I'm coming out and trying to get the title back."

It's the 103rd Open and action began in earnest Thursday night, with the finals slated for Sunday at Kildonan Tennis Club.

"All year I'm at Central Florida and I focus mostly on those matches but as soon as I get home in May, I start training for all the summer tournaments here and of course this one's the biggest one," McNichol said.

"It's my home and I find this is the tournament where all these people have watched me since I was eight years old, growing up playing tennis here... I think it's a good way of showing them how much I've improved.

"I love going out there and battling and winning. Sometimes you're going to lose, but there's nothing more exciting than going out there and winning a big tournament like this."

Besides McNichol's attempt to get back on the winning track here, Winnipeg great Doug DeVriendt -- the No. 5 seed -- is hoping to win his sixth men's singles title, which would tie him with Hall of Famer Art Foster for most ever.

He'll be challenged by top seed Mike Rockman of Toronto along with 2005 Canada Games singles champ Graeme Kassautzki of B.C.

More than 110 players are competing with $3,000 going to the men's champion and $1,700 to the female winner.

Grudge match in the offing

Graeme Kassautzki

Graeme Kassautzki of BC is one of several out-of-province players attempting to claim the Arby's Manitoba Open title.

    Fri Jul 11'08
Winnipeg, MB (DEREK JORY, Winnipeg Sun) – Calling it a grudge match sounds a little harsh, but if both players can make it to the final at the 2008 Arby's Manitoba Open Tennis Championships, that's exactly what it'll be.

The Kildonan Tennis Club is currently home to a frenzy of tennis as the 103rd edition of the championship kicked off earlier this week. More than 110 players are taking part in men's and women's singles, men's and women's doubles and mixed doubles.

Among the competitors in women's singles are Winnipeg's Kyla McNicol, a four-time champion, and Carlene Leyden of Houston, Texas, the 2007 champion. These two have met in the last two Manitoba Open finals, 21-year-old McNicol was the victor in 2006, while 17-year-old Leyden knocked her from her pedestal last year.

Leyden comes in as the top-ranked female, McNicol at number two, and if both players can make it to the finals, the women's championship promises to be the event of the weekend.

"Off the court we're really good friends but of course when we get on the court we both want to win," said McNicol, who recently graduated from the University of Central Florida having been the first Canadian ever to play tennis at the school.

"We're both very competitive and of course I'm looking to get the title back from her this year. I have to get there first though, I have to play a couple of matches to get to the final so we'll see what happens."

Leyden, a recent gradate of Stratford High School in Texas, enjoys the rivalry that she and McNicol have formed on the court, especially since they don't get to play each other very often.

"It's a lot of fun and it's good to see how we've both improved and how we match up against each other," said Leyden. "Because we only play once a year, it's a good measurement of how far we've come."

McNicol and Leyden are also both competing in doubles tennis; McNicol is teamed up with Alexa Zayac in women's doubles to defend their 2007 championship, and with Sean LaCap to do some damage in the mixed category, while Leyden enters women's doubles with her younger sister Jacinta as the duo tries to avenge their 2007 championship loss, and with Geoff Kirbyson in mixed, as the pair look to win their second consecutive title.

While it's a familiar foe that stands in the way of McNicol and Leyden winning the championship, on the men's side newcomer Graeme Kassautzki has to battle the element of surprise, among other things, if he hopes to win it all.

The British Columbia native, who is ranked second coming in, is currently a member of the University of New Mexico tennis team and was the 2005 Canada Games Singles Champion and 2007 Men's Singles Champion at the Tennis Canada University Championships, so competing at a high level won't be his problem. The 21-year-old has simply never played in Manitoba before so he's unsure what to expect from his opponents.

"I don't know many people in my field so I'm not too sure how good they are and stuff like that, so I'm just going to stay focused on my game and how well I play, that's the only thing I can do at this point," Kassautzki said, adding that his forehand and fighting spirit are his most dangerous weapons on the court.

Kassautzki will be up against some stiff competition in the likes of top-seed Mike Rockman, currently the 20th ranked player in the country, fourth-seed Robert Steckley, a former member of Canada's Davis Cup team, and fifth-seed Doug DeVriendt of Winnipeg, a five-time Manitoba Open champion.

If DeVriendt can come out on top this weekend, he'll equal Manitoba Tennis Hall of Famer Art Foster's record of six Manitoba Open singles titles.

The men's singles winner takes home $3,000, while the women's champ is awarded $1,700. Championship games are scheduled for Sunday.
